Positives:

We won, and we won after a poor start to the game.

We won well, and won a game that we would have been 100% certain to lose in the past

Clean sheet

Mooy, Fornaroli were great in attack, Partaalu and Clisby OK in defence.

Negatives:

Still to play 90 minutes against a reasonable team. Next week will give us a good indication of where we are really at.

Injuries are a real worry at the back, especially against a quality attacking team like the visitors

Scoreline flattered somewhat as Jets got in behind regularly but were offside and 'did a Heart' and fell apart after they conceded the first goal.

How about that? First cleansheet, a win against a team with a good defensive record, another away win, 3 wins in a row by 4 goals, braces to Mooy and Fornaroli...

It's almost unreal the good stuff happening at the moment.

Every team will have their chances in a game, and Newcastle had a few in the first half (5 shots and 1 on target). But despite our defence being shaken up with Chapman off injured on the 27th minute, Melbourne City did well enough to limit Newcastle's shots and absorb pressure.

Mooy is simply a freak (in the best possible sense). He steps up when we need him and changes games. That Mooy is the 2nd equal best player for the golden boot (equal with Berisha and Maclaren) and the league leader with assists (with 7, the next best is Broich with 4) highlights how amazing he's been this season. Enjoy him while you can, as it will take a miracle to prevent Mooy from going to a good European club next season.

Fornaroli is providing us with great consistency game after game, and took a great brace. And it's so helpful having a quality no 9 in Fornaroli to complement a quality no 10 in Mooy.

Franjic provided 2 assists (he's equal 3rd best in the league for assists, with 3), and continues to get better and better as he returns to full fitness.

And I believe Retre gave our midfield a big lift from the start of the second half, after he replaced the injured Melling. The team was much better at keeping the ball--much helped by Retre's tidy possession, 32 passes made at 96.9% passing accuracy (just 1 inaccurate pass all game for Retre)--and that better ball retention helped the build attacks much more effectively and score another 3 goals in the second half.

So a huge amount of upside at the moment. Enjoy it. And the team now goes into our home Christmas Derby in white hot form with a good chance to keep things rolling.

Hate to say it (and nobody needs reminding) that these are always the games that we lose.

We're starting to win these types of games. We are no longer the heart of previous years.

Also, just to add, will it be possible to get derby tickets at the stadium on the day or is it all reserved or somethign?

A great win for the lads. The first 30 minutes or so was full of misplaced passes and poor control. Once we scored the goal we stepped up the last ten minutes and it was no surprise to see us come out firing in the second half with 3 goals in 6 minutes.

The last 30 minutes we just strolled through the game and it was left to Sorenson to try and make it interesting lol

Bring on the tards!!

Didn't get to watch it. How was Koren when he came on?

Same. Was pretty much non existent.  Although the game was done and I think the team was more concerned about not conceding than scoring. He didn't lose the ball and played some neat passes. He's way off starting but will be better for the run maybe he'll get 30 min in the Derby.

He needs to look how Retre came on and gave great energy and IMO was instrumental in that period we scored a few.

Absolutely ridiculous to draw anything from Korens performance, both teams could have hit the showers after the forth goal and you wouldn't have noticed ny difference.

He played 20 mins. Enough time to do something good or bad. He's playing to earn a spot in the starting lineup.

He looked like an old guy who had been out for many weeks and lost fitness and match awareness. Based on that performance he's a long way off starting.

Said it at the beginning of the season that JVS finally has a squad of players that fit into the system. Goals are being shared fairly evenly with Fornaroli, Mooy and Novillo all finding the net regularly. Opposing teams aren't coping with the movement and I dare say Franjic is helping this a lot as well as he is providing the fourth option that really stretches defences and allows the others the space to do what they are doing. It's fucking beautiful to watch when it's working like it is at the moment with finally a near full strength squad to choose from.

Koren I think is going to be a bench option for the rest of his time with us. Doesnt have the engine for a full game.

End of season move Fornaroli to marquee and tie him the fuck down long term.

Nailed it. All we need to worry about as a club is fan engagement/fan numbers.

Winning games playing football like we are is all you really need to worry about. Can be engaged with the fans all you like but if you're playing shit football people on the fence aren't going to come to games.

Fact is we will always be the smaller side in Melbourne. Victory were first to market and captured the majority of people wanting to support an a-league team, if we are to catch up it will be after 10+ years of regularly being the superior team on the field in the league and having bigger name marquees, so new generations are attracted to us and not Victory.

Def agree, a good example is actually Freo in the AFL who for their first five years would only play to a half full Subi at best due to two poor coaches and some very poor recruiting decisions made by the first of these coaches.

You could rock up at the gate scan in with your cheapest membership/ticket and then sit on the wing and nobody would ask to check your seat number despite there being very little else going on in Perth and there only being two teams.

Then after finally making finals things turned around very quickly and the games went from under 20,000 to almost always over 30,000 and you had to sit in your assigned seat... the supporters had always been there they were just waiting to see wins being strung together.

Freo are still less supported than the Eagles and will be for a long time but they more than hold their own in Support Numbers and Game Atmosphere... I think City can take something out of that.

Couldn't agree more. And playing the jets when they are 4 down is a good time to hit the accelerator and do something special. Instead he just floated around

Absolutely agree. I know that he still has 17 matches to prove me wrong, but for me Robi Koren is not the right kind of player to be a marquee. He reminds me a lot of Richard Garcia - a competent footballer but who is never going to be a game-changer and has no "wow!" factor. Perhaps it's not surprising that they played for the same club...
Coming on for 20 minutes with City already 4-0 up should have meant that we were treated to a cameo marquee performance - plenty of neat little one-twos, dinky little passes here and there, perfectly-timed little through passes, even perhaps a goal. But no. Can anyone remember a single notable thing that he did?
No, for me Koren is a very one-dimensional player, a complete contrast to our leading players so far this season - Mooy, Fornaroli and Novillo - all of whom are capable of turning a match on its head.

CFG got that one wrong. I doubt that they will make the same mistake again.

Agree with this, it was pretty clear the team were seeking a clean sheet once that 6 minutes of madness had concluded. Koren did what he had to do, didn't shirk his defensive duties and kept the ball circulating. As someone mentioned earlier a full pre season will be of huge benefit to Koren, I think he'll be a solid if unspectacular contributor this season.

Agree. We had no more subs left and it was clear they were content to play out time with the minimum of expended energy and no risk of cards or other injuries.

Under that scenario Koren could not show too much potential. They should've just blown full time after about 65 minutes and saved everyone some time.

There were actually supporters that were affectionately known as 'Freagles' at Dockers home games: West Coast supporters that had no chance of getting an Eagles membership, so they signed up for the Dockers to get the AFL experience. Port Adelaide more recently is another good example...they used to have to put tarps over entire bays at AAMI Stadium to draw attention away from the thousands of empty seats. Now, they pack out Adelaide Oval every week and both Fremantle and Port would be right up there in terms of the most intimidating away games for opposition players.

Winning solves everything, especially in a city like Melbourne which has always got behind a winner and where, for all of Victory's good work in building a fan base, there are still literally millions of potential supporters that are unaligned with any A-League club.

Yeah, there were always those PPL who sat in members near you all season who acted like Dockers games then came head to toe in WCE gear on Derby Day.

The Demo Derby was most fondest memory of these PPL as Clive slowly evaporated their smiles.
