TTDIM: Things that don't irk me

TTDIM:

Socialist Alternative being deregistered at my uni. As well as the way they're reacting and going to react further, continuing to discourage potential left wing supporters.

Socialist Alternative shit me to no end, but for different reasons. Even amongst the left they are divisive, and do themselves no favours when they shoot down ideas that conflict with their 'Marxist/Trotskyist Uni Hipster' ideology. I don't mean to get into politics here, but when I was actively involved in their 'affairs' (I know, I am not proud of myself either) I suggested that Socialist Alternative help out in the community. Y'know, charity work, helping the homeless etc. I reasoned that their actions actually did more to alienate people and by partaking in the community they would gather more support. However, I was instantly shot down. 'No! Protesting and being dicks is the only way!'

They don't like anybody on the Libertarian Left (Market Socialists, Libertarian Socialists, Anarchists etc. In fact, they hate them, and by extension me just as much as people on the right.), and anybody in their ranks who so much as suggests implementing Libertarian Left principals (Direct Action etc.) is shot down and mocked.

It's about taking pictures of Food from Dumpsters to show to other Wannabe Hipsters on Instragram rather than handing Food out to the poor with St Vincent De Paul with a bunch unfashionable Catholic Grannies where nobody will see you.

That's nothing to be ashamed of mate. I am a firm believer that experience is extremely important. Even if it's a negative experience at least you know. Plus your opinion holds more weight now.

Yeah, that's a good way of looking at things :)

I can't remember his name, but I was watching an interview with a rather well known Libertarian Socialist/Anarchist and he said:

"Imagine a town with no Water Well. All of the Marxists will make some signs and protest outside of town hall until they get noticed, but the Libertarian Socialists and Anarchists would grab a shovel and start digging it themselves"

Pretty much sums up the way I see Socialist Alternative.

Is this surprising to you? Think about it...

These are people who strongly believe in the government having to force benevolence on us all to achieve a 'more equitable society', or a 'fairer society', or whatever you want to call it. From that we can infer that they do not believe that an individual, acting of their own free will, has a role to play when it comes to achieving this 'more equitable society'. So why would you expect to see these Socialist Alternative Greens Voting Leftards (SAGVLs) acting benevolently of their own free will?

Contrast that with someone like me, who believes that the government has a fairly minimal role to play in terms of forcing benevolence on us (it's forced because the government takes your money, via taxes etc., and then redistributes it in whatever way they, and not you, decide), and that individuals, of their own free will, will act benevolently to a sufficient level. So I think this group sees a greater need for individual benevolence and feels a greater responsibility to act benevolently when they can.

The empirical evidence I've witnessed throughout my life suggests that what I've said above is true. I don't know about you guys, but I couldn't imagine a SAGVL sparing a fucking crumb for a starving person.

The irony, of course, is that the whole 'socialist paradigm' in a way requires a certain level of benevolence from each individual (that, or a complete lack of rational behaviour), to even come close to being considered realistic.

Now, I'm not saying there is anything wrong with never acting benevolently, I frequently argue that people have a right to be selfish if they so wish. Nor do I believe there is any great virtue in acting benevolently. Both benevolence and selfishness come from a rational decision of benefit vs cost, so just because one person derives more benefit out of benevolent acts than another does not necessarily make them a 'better person' (if there is such a thing).

So don't think my position on SAGVL-types is due to the lack of individual benevolence that I identified above. Rather, it comes down to a few things, such as their unrealistic beliefs, and their general behaviour. But the primary reason is, I feel there is a certain 'negativity' about their philosophy. An opposition to individual freedom, a disbelief in an individual's capacity of rational benevolence, a preference for negative talk/expression rather than positive action, a lack of desire to see others live their lives to the fullest and on their own terms (probably even a desire to see the opposite), etc. All things which are in direct opposition to my own beliefs.

I agree.

I feel as if that is what separates "SAGVL-types" from those (including me) on the Libertarian Left. An example being those in Socialist Alternative who think that a 'Vanguard Left Wing Party' must lead the people to a more equitable society, of course giving the country a ridiculous name like "The Democratic People's Worker's Republic of Australia" in the process. Really, what it boils down to is SAGVL-types feeling like the 'Left should rule, only with the rule of the left will we achieve equality', when in reality true equality comes with direct democracy, equal participation in government and not feeling the need to exclude others from the process just because they believe in the free market for example. As you said, the government is not a benevolent force that will guide us to a more equitable society.

True Socialism should be about freedom. People should have the freedom to live out their lives as they see fit so long as it does not impede upon the rights of others (Of course what constitues 'impeding on the rights of others' is up for debate and in the event of living in a socialist society that would be decided democratically).

Is it any wonder why SAGVL-types don't like Libertarian Socialists, Market Socialists etc? We are just as opposite to them as they are to the right, even economically, I (and most Anarchists and Left Libertarians) don't believe in state planning and nationalisation of industry, although we are into alternative economic theories such as Syndicalism, and we accept that there will still be people like you Tesla in a socialist society, and the Teslas in this hypothetical society would be free to partake in government and other institutions.

So myself and others with similar beliefs are opposite? Our outlook is too positive? I dunno haha. Sorry to go off on a tangent, but I do like to keep my beliefs and theirs as separate as possible haha.

TTDIM: Kanye West rants. If people actually listened to what he has to say, as poorly articulated as it may be, instead of just going straight to the 'Kanye West is a dickhead' conclusion (even though it may be true), he actually has some real shit to say that might add to your understanding of the world (srs).

Seems to be a regular feature of his shows now, keen to witness one in person on Tuesday

His show at BDO was amazing, especially as it was after twisted fantasy. Only real complaint was all his emo relationship stuff he went on about.

He really gets consumed by shit, it was that 'emo relationship' shit back then, now it's the whole 'my creativity is being limited' thing, probably what makes him the great artist he is (in b4 haters), and why each album is so different from the last. You can see that he was consumed by that 'emo relationship' shit on twisted fantasy, while Yeezus was the 'my creativity is being limited' shit he is consumed by currently.

I really cbf with 'hip hop purists' who care more about someone fitting some stereotype they have of what hip hop is, rather than appreciating a true fucking artist. Yes, he is an above average rapper at best when it comes to technique, but makes up for it by being the most creative. Yes, he crosses genres, but who gives a fuck.

Although his experimental stuff is not always to my taste and I do find at times he his lyrically lazy ("just got flashed by the paparazzi. Damn these niggas got me. I hate these niggas more than a nazi" for example), he is always wanting to push boundaries which I really respect.

I think he has been removed from the average person for way too long and that is having an effect on how he is relating to his original audience which is clearly frustrating him. But his original audience are not going to be happy unless he stays the same, or at least within the same boundaries so if I was him, I would be doing more to distance myself from that market and just worrying about the people that do appreciate what he is doing.

I like some kanye shit, better producer than rapper if you ask me. Man has talent no doubt.

I agree, I think he is up there as a contender for GOAT producer (at the very least, many would credit him for bringing sampling back), while he isn't at that level as a rapper. One of the most creative rappers, yes, and a very important and influential rapper (helped open it up for non-gangster types, who really dominate the industry now), but certainly not in that top tier.

Is Pusha T still supporting? Would be more keen to see him than Kanye this time around.

Yes, a nice bonus. Pusha T is a bit too 'gangster' for me but I still like a lot of his music.

Hes good but I wouldn't say hes preemo or pete rock good. Maybe the boom bap favourtism coming in to play there.

Have you seen the dilated peoples doco I think it is where they have Kanye in the studio? That really made me look at his production in a different light.

Probably should be taking this to the hip hop thread.

Used to be a big fan of Kanye. Really liked his first 2 albums which to me were Kanye more as a storyteller, and saw him at Festering Hole back in '06. Ever since then I think he's been living with his head shoved up his own arse and full of his own self-importance. Can't say i've really listened to much of his stuff since then. It doesn't really do it for me, and I think he just tries too hard. It's not his attitude that's stopped me listening to him, I just don't find him interesting anymore.

As someone who doesn't particularly follow Pusha T, I didn't realise he had 2 projects last year, and I only had Wrath of Caine (and always wondered why it seemed to be missing quite a few good Pusha T tracks I'd heard). I'd obviously heard of both, don't know why I didn't realise there were 2 projects earlier.

So I grabbed My Name is My Name, definitely looking forward to Pusha T a lot more now, shits fire.

It's always interesting to see what the crowd is like at hip hop concerts in Australia, assuming it will be pretty random because Kanye is so mainstream, but pretty funny to compare different artists. Eg Kendrick Lamar is the only rapper whose gig had a lot of Africans at it, but then it also had a lot of really nerdy looking white guys, whereas rappers like Lupe Fiasco and Childish Gambino are mainly white people, and a lot of those (maybe surprisingly) are hipster-types. CG easily drew the most females, but I'm assuming Kanye will have a lot more females (probably approaching 50-50 male to female ratio). Probably not too many hipster-types. Really just expecting a random mix of people.

Yeah My Name is dope, nicely made up for the disappointment of Yeezus for me. He's also in Re-Up Gang whose album was pretty good as well, bit more harder edged.

Only big concert type hip hop gig I went to was Eminem at Etihad about 3 years ago, was full of kids with their mums which was a bit weird. Other than that all the gigs I went to at pub venues were a mix of middle aged whiteys and taggers with about 2 girls in the crowd.

In the Western suburbs, we don't have hipsters.

Or at least we didn't.

So don't really know what hipsters listen to.

To be fair, this is Melbourne, half the population are 'hipsters'. It wasn't really surprising at CG because he is pretty much a hipster himself (more your apolitical hipster at this), but it was a surprise at Lupe Fiasco (more your lefty political hipster at this) because I really don't know what would attract hipsters to his music at the time (this is before he was political). Though I guess he is pretty much a lefty hipster himself nowadays when I think about the ridiculous attire and hairstyle he has had since becoming political :hmm:

White people have always struggled to suit the rapping/hip hop genre, which is why they are almost always wannabe gangsters, or alternative music listeners who have dabbled in the scene, usually to more mellow varieties of the genre.

However in the past couple of years, as we've seen the hipster movement swallow almost every music genre available in an attempt to stay fresh, hip hop has really been hit hard.

Acts like Kanye, Death Grips and Odd Future really kicked it off, with their focus being on production, instead of making traditional hiphop. Consequently, they were seen as edgy and 'revolutionary', which made them massively popular in the hipster community. Pretty sad really.

As someone who has quite alternative and probably hipster music tastes, I've seen those who listen to similar stuff almost completely devote their time to discovering up coming rappers, as that's what is paying the most hipster creds at the moment. I'd probably argue that it's dying off now (being replaced with the 'deep house' scene), but last summer, pitchfork, /mu/, etc, were almost exclusively focussing on hip hop.

You are pegging Hipsters as being way more political than what they actually are...

All Hipsters care about with everything from Politics to Music to Food is that there choices in each field are seen to be Hip.

There is no one defining political or spiritual force that really influence them in making choices other than the need to seen in a particular light by other people... hence why they love Twitter and Instagram so much because it helps them achieve this prime aim.

A good example is how many of them flock to Vego Restaurants not because they are actually behind the Vego Movement but purely because the Veggie Restaurant itself is seen as Hip ATM.

NOTE: Inb4 some wannabe Hipster from the Outer Suburbs questions my right to judge Hipsters.

The definition of what is and isnt hipster is an interesting one. Quite some time ago I became slightly concerned that I may be a hipster. I wouldnt and never have considered myself to be a hipster (a person that does things purely to be hip) but a fair few things I enjoy are definitely also enjoyed by the hipster crowd too, so I started to become very aware of things I like and even went to the trouble of depriving myself of things and experiences because they may come across as too hipsteresque. But then it occurred to me that this attitude is also hipster- in fact probably more hipster than being a full blown hipster. It all became way too exhausting so I just enjoy what I enjoy and if people think I am a cockhead for it, well they can think that. I dont have the energy to care anymore.

In short, I think a hipster (much like the grunge/alternative crowd back in the day) is someone who lacks self-confidence and feels the need to immerse themselves in things that they feel make them more popular and likable.

Or maybe thats a hipster attitude. I cant tell anymore

Hipster imo is more about trying to be on the cutting edge of new things and having a self perceived image of a trailblazing unique non conforming individual. When in reality they are just as conforming, if not more so than people who are trying to fit in.

Imo the best attitude to have is what you said, like what you want to like and fuck what anyone else says.

Very true. This is what I meant when I compared it to the "alternative" crowd. It is all about being different from everyone else except for the people you hang out with and then its about being exactly the same as the people you hang out with.

It all goes around in circles until the only way to be different is by conforming to the masses. It's like those car ads that tell you to buy this car (that everyone else drives) so you can express yourself and be an individual. But then by buying that car you become mainstream so your not an individual anymore so you buy some obscure car that nobody has ever heard of. But then people see your car and say "hey! That car is so unique! I am going to get one" and so on.

It's pretty funny really.

My dad actually told me once when I was really young that if I wanted to be cool all I had to do was pick something cool and keep doing it. Don't ever stop doing it, even when it becomes uncool (especially when it becomes uncool) because eventually it will become cool again. But because you have been doing it even when it wasn't cool you will be the coolest person on the planet.

I never really thought about it that much until last year I saw some hipster at uni wearing the exact same adidas Mutumbo tshirt that I wore in grade 5.

I never really thought about it that much until last year I saw some hipster at uni wearing the exact same adidas Mutumbo tshirt that I wore in grade 5.

I liked that post for the adidas mutombo shirt.

It was a really cool shirt

My dad actually told me once when I was really young that if I wanted to be cool all I had to do was pick something cool and keep doing it. Don't ever stop doing it, even when it becomes uncool (especially when it becomes uncool) because eventually it will become cool again. But because you have been doing it even when it wasn't cool you will be the coolest person on the planet.

Sometimes when something I like all of a sudden becomes popular/cool/trendy I really start to be put off of it. Does that make me an anti-hipster? Or does it in fact make me a hipster because maybe I only liked it due to it being unpopular and that kind of made it 'cool' because it was sort of different/unique?

It's all getting quite confusing and the last thing I need is more introspection.

What ksk and malloy said isn't bad advice, like what you want to like and fuck what anyone else says, but I think it's a bit overrated tbh, it's easier and in some ways beneficial just to conform. Personally I'm too arrogant (I just assume what I like or do is better because I think I'm smarter than everyone else) to do that but it does often look tempting.
