Dominated the right side directly, and indirectly through leadership. Quality passes and great positioning defensively and offensively. A near faultless game. Nearly BOG.

Spot on. Wellington didn't have a look in down our right whilst he was on and was dynamite going forward.

Socceroos defender Ivan Franjic assisting FC Strathmore’s coaching staff in pursuit of State League 4 North title

Tim Michell

June 28, 2016

FC STRATHMORE’S bid for the State League 4 North title is being aided by the experience of Socceroos and A-League defender Ivan Franjic.

The 28-year-old, who has made 20 appearances for the national side, has been part of Strathmore coach Hrvoje Matkovic’s staff this season.

Matkovic said the club has been impressed by Franjic’s commitment and predicted the right-back would “make one hell of a coach.”

“They train in the mornings and he comes in the afternoons and helps out,” Matkovic said.

“The whole off-season of the A-League, he’s been to every training.

“He’s really committed ... he’s going to make one hell of a coach.”

Matkovic said Franjic’s influence on the squad, which sits second in State League 4 North, had been obvious.

“He’s got a good future in coaching, he’s got great vision,” he said.

Franjic played for Victorian sides St Albans Saints, Melbourne Knights and Oakleigh Cannons before earning an A-League opportunity with Brisbane Roar.

He has since played 133 matches in the national competition, including 18 with his current side Melbourne City.

FC Strathmore is six points behind Epping City in the title race with nine rounds remaining in the campaign.

But the side will get an opportunity to close the gap next weekend when it travels to Duffy Street Reserve to take on the ladder leader.

Normally in football a player who is not injured but not playing has been the subject of a serious transfer enquiry.

So it's either that or the coach is so used to him being injured he forgot to mention him to the journo.

Perhaps we should add him into the "Where are they now?" thread...

Makes sense to release him, after all we have so many defenders already.

What with this coaching business at Strathmore plus no word from City I wonder whether he's in dispute with us or may have even walked out on us?

If true this sort of shit infuriates me.

Why can't the club just list he is out due to illness etc etc.

It's basic communication that doesn't effect squat and keeps those few that actually care informed.

Time to take a deep breath and a bit of a stroll.

Couldn't agree more. It's much more damaging, in my opinion, to avoid keeping us informed, even when the truth doesn't seem that bad. It's a virus. It's nobody's fault. There's no reason to avoid telling us that this was the reason for his absence, prior to the first practice match.

Player Update: Ivan Franjic

Tuesday, 16 August 2016

Melbourne City FC can confirm defender Ivan Franjic has been ruled out for an indefinite period after suffering a virus during pre-season.

The virus has caused inflammation in the area surrounding his heart and subsequently the player has discontinued training.

Franjic is currently under the care and assessment of a specialist cardiologist who has advised that he will make a full recovery.

Good to get some transparency from the club.

Shit for Ivan, gotta wish him all the best with his recovery.

Wondering if there's on an option for an injury replacement player, should it be necessary.

Melbourne City and Socceroos defender Ivan Franjic sidelined with heart condition

Matt Windley and David Davutovic

16 August 2016

THE short-term future of Melbourne City fullback Ivan Franjic is in doubt, with the Socceroo laid low by a rare virus that is set to keep him sidelined for a prolonged period of time.

The inflammatory condition is impacting Franjic’s heart, prompting an understandably cautious treatment approach from City.

He did not feature in his side’s two pre-season friendlies nor its FFA Cup Round of 32 win against Floreat Athena.

The 28-year-old was not at Tim Cahill’s unveiling at City headquarters on Monday either as he is currently overseas.

The virus is not too dissimilar to that which afflicted Carl Valeri last season, although the illness that kept the Melbourne Victory captain out for four months affected his brain not his heart.

City is reticent to hang a return date over Franjic’s head, although he is unlikely to return to training before October, with another series of tests locked in for later next month.

In former Wellington fullback Manny Muscat it does have cover on the right side of defence, while long-time Mariners left back Josh Rose joined the club last week.

But despite those recruitments, coach John van ’t Schip has called in young Dandenong City fullback Brad Clarke, who has joined in senior training for the past few weeks and can be promoted to the senior squad as an injury replacement.

“Ivan is currently under the care and assessment of a specialist cardiologist who has advised he will make a full recovery,” City said in a statement.

“At this stage the cardiologist and the club are unable to provide a time frame for Ivan’s recovery.”

Franjic, in the second year of a three-year deal, endured an injury-marred first season at City.

But he is understood to be especially devastated by the illness given that, before being laid low, he had been as fit as he has been since suffering a serious hamstring injury in the 2014 World Cup.

Franjic is said to have been completing a routine training session early in pre-season before complaining of chest pain.

Subsequent tests diagnosed the virus.

A lengthy period of inactivity also pushes back his national team aspirations.

The former Brisbane Roar star has not played for the Socceroos since June last year.

Franjic aside, City’s wretched injury luck from the past two seasons is on the improve.

Winger Corey Gameiro is back in full training after his long-term knee injury and midfielder Neil Kilkenny appears on track to overcome a foot injury in time to play Brisbane Strikers in the FFA Cup next week.

It's not exactly clear but it sounds like he has pericarditis, an inflammation of the sac that surrounds the heart. It can accumulate fluid that can compress the heart and in severe cases can result in death. Hopefully he has this rather than myocarditis, an inflammation o fate heart  muscle itself that can result in heart failure. Given that he is on holiday I imagine that he has pericarditis with a small pericardial effusion (fluid accumulation) and this will just be monitored until it goes away. Then he can resume training.

If he will miss a chunk of the season, as he is surely on some good coin, you would think we could get a reasonably decent injury replacement

Will be hard to get one thats not a Visa though. More likely to be a kid tbh.

But the injury replacement cash can be used in the incoming Visa spot and lesser cash can be used on a RB the actual injury replacement .

I think.

Having said that does that open the door for some old favorites.

Germano into RB and old mate Samaras.

Nah pretty sure the injury replacement can be signed for UP to the amount of the original contract, but any leftover cant be held over for other places in the cap, its simply forgone. Happy to be proven wrong though.
Germano would be an option, but it sounds like they are looking at Brad Clarke from Dandenong atm.

I thought they'd already signed Clarke as the injury replacement?  As to why, well history shows us its hard to get a highly rated player for a short term contract, especially at this time of year and perhaps that is the reason.
