Murfy1
Nick Fitzgerald was released by the Mariners today:Â http://www.a-league.com.au/article/central-coast-mariners-farewell-nick-fitzgerald/178ygj6xg3dya1eexva3w3b5u8 Â A young and pretty talented player (was the NYL player of the season in 2012 for Brisbane), can score goals and produce assists, and can play RW (played RW in 8 of his 11 games for CCM this season, and scored a pretty good goal... against us). Â As an injury replacement for Corey Gameiro (out for the season)Â or maybe Connor Chapman (2 to 3 months) we could do a lot worse. Would be a decent pick up IMO, especially if Williams leaves this month.
mus-28
Fitzgerald is another Dugandzic type player, good  effort but very little end product. He's more a traditional right midfielder in a 4-4-2 who'll get up and down the park and provide good cover for his fullback, not a dangerous winger who'll unsettle opposition full backs. silva10
I believe we need another central defender more importantly than an attacker. If Koren leaves this month, that will create a Visa spot and the club should try and bring someone in who can give us more solidity. If he leaves there is a vacancy for another visa player, but we can't get one because of the cap. And any new player can't be paid outside the cap because of the limit of two marquees. jw1739
Couldn't be a visa player, but we can sign an Australian injury replacement. Replacements must be like-for-like. As I understand the combined impact of the rules there's actually no point in terminating Koren unless one of the other visa players is injured. Murfy1
JW is right. Injury replacements must be "like-for-like". It's a little subjective (there are even cases of injury replacements being rejected by the FFA because the replacement player didn't play in exactly the same position as the injured player), but clubs can't sign a Visa player for an injured Australian player and the replacement can't be paid more than the injured player.  Missed this. It's from "The Secret Agent", so take it with a generous helping of salt, but this website suggested 2 weeks ago that Melbourne City is possibly interested in Michael Thwaite: "Perth Glory central defender and former Socceroo Michael Thwaite might be in the twilight of his career, but that hasn't stopped Brisbane Roar, Melbourne City and Sydney FC making some discreet enquiries about his playing future" (http://www.sportingnews.com/list/4689199-michael-essien-wants-to-play-in-australias-a-league/slide/421249).   Thwaite is out of contract at the end of the season, so he would be a player for next season if the club was interested  The same website suggested Melbourne City has a stronger interest in Alex Wilkinson, and has tabled him an offer (http://www.sportingnews.com/list/4689500-alex-gersbach-wanted-by-english-championship-club/slide/422300). The article also suggests that the 2 other A-League clubs interested in Wilkinson (Victory and Sydney) set 2 week deadlines for Wilkinson to make up his mind, so they could get ready for their approaching Asian Champions League campaigns seemingly. That 2 week deadline will seemingly be up this Tuesday. If Wilkinson hasn't signed for either Victory or Sydney by then, it would seem that we are the most likely A-League club to land him. And if interest from the Middle East or elsewhere overseas doesn't materialise before the January transfer window closes, then Melbourne City would seemingly be a real chance to get Wilkinson this month.   I also agree that strengthening the defence would yield the most returns for Melbourne City, so hopefully we see something happen on that front. But at the same time if the club can do some other good business with good available midfielders or forwards (especially wingers) then that would be fine in my opinion as well.. Johnny Blaze
Can confirm David Williams is heading overseas very soon. Has received an offer from an international club, that he has agreed to. City are just about to sign off on the details.  Was told he wouldn't get another game by the club prior a shock call up this week. Also, never even considered the Adelaide offer. Was all media beat up. Edited January 10, 2016 by Johnny Blaze

Johnny Blaze
Can't comment on if Malik is still keen, just that Williams never even entertained the idea of moving to Adelaide. mus-28
Our business in the transfer market depends a lot on what JVS' plans are tactically. If he plans to stick with the 3-5-2 then we could probably do with a quality centre back. If he reverts back to the 4-3-3 we definitely need a right winger. Hopefully we stick with the 3-5-2 long term as it's much easier to build a balanced squad, particularly with the lack of quality wingers with Australian citizenship.

We have always needed another quality centre back regardless of what system we play. Going forward next season we will need two new ones.
possiblygeorge
Managed to come across this comment on a video of Safuwan's first goal for us. Singapore people buying Victory shirts with Safuwan's name on the back? Wut. Maybe chase another player from Malaysia as it's a bit easy to get attention from Asia when you're signing a player of theirs that they rate, especially when a Club is doing well. Pity about the lads buying Victory shirts when he was a City player. Â
