Arsenal in the EPL.

Following on from my father and his father before him. The latter reputed to have had his ribs broken when the crowd surged on to a crush barrier on the terraces during an FA Cup-tie at Highbury.

"My" club, though, non-league Chelmsford City.

I lived in Brunswick as a kid in the late 80's/early 90's and like everyone else at the local Catholic Primary School I followed Juventus and Brunswick Juventus (Despite being one of the few Anglos in the school).

As a 9 year old I thought there was only one Soccer League like one Footy League... Some how I thought Juve was Newcastle because of the kit and before I knew it The Toon had ripped my heart out with Andy Cole leaving and close calls in 1996 and 1997.

This seemed very similar to what my number one love at the time in Geelong were also doing at the time so it all seemed to make sense in the end.

I adopted Liverpool.

Influences:

  • The large number of scousers in the seniors at my club when I was a teenager
  • Craig Johnston.  Incredible seeing a fellow Aussie making it at the Champions of the English First Division

I was introduced to the EPL by my grandfather and the first game was a Leeds United game on TV where Harry Kewell and Mark Viduka were still there, once they got relegated (at the time I was still young and did not understand the relegation system, I was like 7? Grade 3?) I honestly thought Leeds United died so I had to pick another team just to keep afloat with the socializing with friends in the early years of primary school, so I picked Arsenal because their one player (Thierry Henry), he stood out and was the coolest guy on the field.

So at the moment I have an interest in both teams' performance and own both retro jerseys of both clubs

Swansea.
I didn't really start following football until a few years ago, I actually started supporting Heart before Swansea. Anyway when I was looking for a team to follow in England I watched Swansea beat Man City 1-0 (This was in the 2011/2012 season) and I was mesmerised by the way Swansea played, been supporting them ever since, even though they have kind of strayed from the way they played under Rogers.

Manchester United. Why? Even though I loved aussie rules when I was young, I'd watch SBS and Sports tonight for some sport highlights and seeing the FA Prem league two players caught my eye, Beckham and Rooney. Along with this my interest sparked when playing soccer for Interschool sports at my primary school and watching my cousins play for their local side. I still have my small Man Uniteds fan tshirt which had navy on it .

Funnily enough, Manchester City as of the 2007-08 season.

I had just gotten Austar so I decided to watch random EPL games and quickly grew fond of the Citizens, I'm not sure why but they were a fun team to watch with the likes of Elano, Richards and Petrov, and I also fucking loved watching Richard Dunne.

Sure enough, the next season the club's ownership changed hands, good old Robinho came to town and the club has gone on to do grand things ever since (taking ownership of Melbourne Heart obviously the peak of these accomplishments).

The more I've become involved with Heart and the A-League over the years, the more my support for City has dwindled but obviously with the takeover, my interest has now never been higher. I just hope they do right by our club and its fans.

In the early 80s the only live game was the FA cup final. For me it was so cool to wake up at midnight and sit with my old man and watch a game of soccer. I was hooked, Archibald, Ricky Villa, Ossie Ardiles, Garth Crooks and Glen Hoddle. What an era and never to win a title, cup specialists. Basically started my journey of following teams that promise so much and fail to deliver when it really counts.

Spurs unfortunately form me.

Sunderland for me as that's where my wife was born. I also remember watching them win the 73 FA cup and was impressed that a lower division club beat a 1st division club. I've seen them play at the SoL 4 times for 3 wins, which is not a bad strike rate. They'll never be a top flight club but their supporter passion has me hooked. Now taking more of an interest in Man City, but "I'm Sunderland till I die".

Aston Villa.  Not sure why as it was so long ago that I chose them.  Probably a combination of their colours, and the first English soccer game I watched (first game and colours are often why I pick a team).

To be fair though, I barely pay attention to EPL -  my vote barely counts.

Arsenal and Leeds.

Vaguely followed Liverpool and Portsmouth from 2006-2008, but not in a major way. Had no real interest in the game.

When I decided I wanted to get into it, I jumped on Arsenal because I liked Fabregas and Henry. The fact they were relatively successful and that they were't United or Chelsea certainly helped.

I've always had a soft spot for Leeds, (earliest football memories, Kewell and Viduka etc), but I've adopted them as my lower league side now.

My "home" team has to be Crystal Palace as i was born about four miles from Selhurst park and Went to watch them play when i was about seven and have been a true believer ever since through thick and thin. When i first followed "the Palace" they were known as the glaziers after Crystal Palace but changed to The Eagles sometime in the 1960s .

Arsenal. During the late 80's when ABC used to screen some highlights on Saturday afternoons, I came across a team that were wearing the same colours as the club I'd grown up at and played juniors at. From that day forth Arsenal became my team.

Little did I know it was the away kit, and the Navy blue shorts weren't black as I thought, but from that day onward it was only ever Arsenal. Back then you were lucky to get to watch the weekly highlights show on ABC and would have to buy British Football Weekly if you wanted more in depth information.

Step dad is from Dagenham so inherited west ham as my english club. Didn't realise people supported clubs outside of the dutch league until I was 7 or 8. Also have a fondness for Yeovil as i lived there for almost two years and saw them in the play off final at Wembley against Blackpool. Club punches way above its means.

Manchester United. Just remember watching them at a very young age on SBS around 2002-03 and started playing with them on FIFA with players like Beckham, Scholes, Giggs, Neville and Ruud van Nistelrooy. I didn't really know they were so successful or that they won the leaguetitle that season but how lucky was I that I got to watch so many title victories from the years to come.

But I still wish that I had chosen a less successful team as I have had to witness the moments with so many gloryhunters.

Not sure why I gravitated towards Swansea either. I'm glad I did though. They have great players. Shelvey has to be one of my favorite players to watch.

He can frustrate me at times, but yes, when he is on song he is exciting to watch. Not the best season this year I'll admit, but I was kind of expecting it considering our European commitments.

Manchester City.

About 10 years ago i moved into an estate full of poms, and we used to get together and watch EPL on the big screen.

Most of the people i knew followed the big 4 clubs at the time (united/arsenal/liverpool/chelsea) and i didnt want to follow one of the big ones so i chose City .

I Found it strange i had neighbours and friends that only follow their home town team and wont follow a premier league team.

Westham, Blackpool, Barnsley, etc etc .

The best night ever was when we were watching liverpool Vs barnsley in a Cup match in the theatre room, My cocky liverpool mate ended up on his knees in despair and the barnsley mate was estatic after a late goal to win !!!

What about Dag & Red? I used to play as them in Championship Manager 00/01.

Everton for me, think it was 2002 or 2003 when Rooney burst on to the scene and I was playing CM using them as well, luck would have it that we bought a certain Tim Cahill a few years later. Only been to Goodison Park once, but it shall not be the last!

COYB!!

Good man. I'm a Villa supporter as well. Before I had an interest in the league I was a passive Arsenal fan (still have a soft spot for them) since my brother and dad follow them, but when I started watching matches I ended up with Villa. Combination of the colours, name, lion symbol and a few other things were probably what caught my attention. Arsenal or Liverpool would've made more sense in terms of following a team that family/relatives support, but once you start watching a team and develop an attachment to them it's difficult to change. I kind of like the underdog status, even though at the time I started following them was when they were marginally pushing for top 4-6. Villa's history is also very impressive, but I only became aware of that after I started supporting them.

The club has been a shambles lately though, but is currently up for sale. Hopefully something good can come from this.

I think Dag & Red are a lot of West Ham supporters second team to be fair. Step dad's family were well and truly West Ham though.

Manchester City...

After not having any interest in the EPL whatsoever until last year September, I was introduced to Manchester City by a fellow ysider and since then I have had an interest in the EPL, watching matches and buying the merch of MCFC. When it was announced they were buying MH it consolidated my support for them.

Started off with Chelsea as my uncle is a Chelsea member living in the UK so when I was around 10 and over there he took me to a couple games at Stamford Bridge. Loved watching players like Zola, Hasselbaink, Melchiot, Petit and Gudjohnsen get around the park. As soon as the money started spilling in Shevchenko/ Crespo I started to lose a bit of interest.

More recently I lived near Birmingham for 12 months in 2010. Decided to support Birmingham City purely cos they were in the EPL and tickets were cheap. What a year it was to get on board, wins agian Chelsea, draws against City and Liverpool , and the Carling Cup semi final win against The Villa (complete with pitch invasion, riot police and police helicopters). Oh and the Carling CUp!!!

Times at the moment for the blues are hard with our ex (or current, i'm unsure) president/ CEO Carsen Young in jail and the cash has well and truely dried up for the club. Yet somehow the lads managed to stay up in the Champioship despite relying on month long loan players on the books.

Man.Utd

Couple of factors influenced my support. Name and colours, as a kid without no external influences, name and colour will probably be the main thing that attracts you to a club, more so colour, usually its the one you like most obviously.

Secondly, i used to watch the Champions League as a kid, and United got a fair bit of airtime on sbs's limited showing. 2 games that particularly stood out were the ties vs Fiorrentina and Deportivo La Coruna. Exciting game, and Giggs killed it in one of them, its all i could think about the next day at school.

Unfortunately my commitments have had to be shifted elsewhere, too much of a effort to watch games when youve grown up, full time job and going out. But Fergie will always be in my thoughts, so much respect for him and thankful for the good memories ive had of the club watching all these years, need to eventually get my ass to a home game, and from what i heard away game experience is even better. Look forward to exciting players emerging at the club once again.
