Not his best game today, but he is more than adequate at Left Back in my opinion and could very well blossom into a real quality left back with more game time, and some specialised training. Good to have him in at LB over Rambo- who I just feel is really ( for want of a better word) dumb.

Keep him and persist with him at LB. I pray Rambo doesn't ever play there again.

Also think we look better with a back 4.

Need the Hoff back instead of Rob W

Keep him and play him as a left winger and cover for LB. Bring in a LB in January

Whenever we do get a new LB. That'll be the day and yes, I hope it comes in Jan.

I'm worried JVS is going to destroy this kid's career, he's a really average LB imo but obviously has the potential to be an exceptional winger.

Need a genuine LB asap so he can push further up the ground and really shine, even if it's off the bench.

I fear JVS may have already destroyed his career, we need that LB before it's too late.

He did nothing wrong against Perth. It's obvious we need a left back, but I would be happy with Ben until we do sign one.

Then we can move Ramsay on and have Ben playing on the left wing were I believe he will then begin to show his true ability.

Love to see him on the wing too and agree he is a better option than Ramsey. Still the biggest weakness in our defence.

Garuccio heralds City's scoring strike-rate

21 February 2016

Matt Dorman

Melbourne City utility Ben Garuccio has praised his teammates for the attacking efficiency which helped secure a 4-1 win over Central Coast Mariners on Sunday.

City trailed 1-0 at the break through Mitch Austin’s stunning breakaway goal, but rallied to turn the match around with a dominant second 45 minutes.

The competition’s leading scorers notched their 50th goal in just 20 matches when Aaron Mooy stroked home his second deep in added time.

Garuccio was one of three City players to score as his first ever Hyundai A-League goal put the hosts 3-1 ahead in the 69th minute.

“It was good. It was a must-win game and we went down 1-0, but we also saw they took the lead last week (and lost 3-2 to Adelaide United),” Garuccio said on Fox Sports after the match.

“We knew we would have chances. Credit to the boys, we took our chances in the second half.

“That was an important three points for us.”

City’s powerful attacking display came despite an off-day for star forward Bruno Fornaroli, who failed to beat Mariners goalkeeper Paul Izzo with a number of attempts.

Garuccio acknowledged his teammate’s smart assist by mimicking the Uruguayan’s goal celebration after tucking away a near-post finish.

“That was (just) for Bruno, what he does. I said, ‘if you assist me I’ll make sure I do this one (celebration gesture)’ so I gave it back to him,” the first-time goalscorer smiled.

Garuccio has been with City (previously Heart) for a few years now but the 2015/16 campaign looks to be his breakout season in the Hyundai A-League.

The versatile 20-year-old  - equally comfortable at left-back or wing – has featured in 12 games so far this season, making his mark in City’s eye-catching, attacking style.

With searing speed, great dribbling skills and an excellent engine, Garuccio has the talent to be a star of the Hyundai A-League for a very long time.

And he can only get better working with the likes of Aaron Mooy, Bruno Fornaroli, Michael Zullo and Alex Wilkinson at City.

Born in Adelaide, Garuccio signed with Heart in 2012 and was regarded as one of the hottest properties at youth level having been involved with the AIS and also going on to play for the Young Socceroos.

After getting small tastes of life in the A-League, he’s really come of age under John van ‘t Schip this season.

Garuccio has provided three assists, created nine chances, had 10 success dribbles and played in 13 crosses from open play.

The defensive side of his game has also gone to another level, making 38 interceptions, 33 tackles and 25 clearances, while his 289 passes have been at an accuracy rate of 73%.

Pretty impressive stuff and a clear indication why Garuccio is in the running for the NAB Young Footballer of the Year.

Emotions take over for first-time scorer Garuccio as City aim for top spot

February 24, 2016

Michael Lynch

Melbourne City youngster Ben Garuccio vowed that when he scored his first A-League goal he would react in a cool, calm manner and behave as if hitting the back of the net was the most natural thing in the world.

The reality, of course, was quite different. Garuccio wheeled in triumph and embarked on a long run, first towards the crowd and then back to his teammates after nailing the third and sealing goal in what was eventually a 4-1 romp by City against league cellar dwellers Central Coast Mariners on Sunday.

Teammate Bruno Fornaroli (who simply knocks up scoring goals having notched 17 already this season) had predicted to Garuccio in training all week leading up to the game that he would score.

But the 20-year-old, who rarely these days gets the chance to hit the target as he is most often used as a left-back, could only dream of doing so.

Against the Mariners, coach John van 't Schip deployed the South Australian as a left-winger to cover for the club-suspended Harry Novillo, and he took his chance with aplomb, the final assist coming from Fornaroli.

That, as Garuccio notes, was ironic, as the Uruguayan, who has been the competition's most prolific marksman this season, had an uncharacteristically quiet afternoon for him and failed to register on the scoresheet.

"He normally gets so many goals but this time he provided me with the assist, so I was happy about that," Garuccio says.

"It was my first-ever goal and I had always said that if I got a goal I would be quite calm about it. But of course the emotion took over and I really celebrated.

"Bruno had been telling me all week I would, but I couldn't believe the chance would come. When I did finish it off I copied his celebration too."

There is every chance that Garuccio, who joined City as a 17-year-old having been overlooked by his home-town club Adelaide United, will continue higher up the pitch this week in Novillo's continued absence.

He and Michael Zullo (who played at left-back) made a good combination. Both are fairly similar players, and, as Garuccio said, they understand how to combine defensively having both spent time at left-back as well as on the wing.

"It worked well for us. We know how to cover for each other, and when he goes I can drop in deeper in defence, while he covers for me when I am in those advanced areas."

Garuccio has shown plenty of character to re-establish himself in the City first-team squad this season.

He missed most of last season with a stress fracture to the right foot and had to battle back into contention at a club that had signed a number of experienced players - including Zullo - who could play in his position.

"I had been getting a good run of games before that but it was a setback. I got back into the team for the FFA Cup semi-final against Perth Glory [a defeat in the west] and have been in and around it since then."

City has mixed up their formations this season but Garuccio acknowledges that his best chance of seeing action is when van 't Schip opts to play with a 4-3-3 set-up as there are spots on the left of midfield and in attack.

Like everyone at City, he is delighted by the team's freewheeling style and the number of goals they have scored - 50 - in 20 matches. But also like everyone at the City Football Academy, he would like to see things tightened up at the back.

"It's great scoring so often and entertaining the crowds, but we would like to keep some more clean sheets. That becomes more important when the finals come round."

City can go to the top of the table for the first time in the club's history on Friday night - albeit temporarily - if they can beat Wellington Phoenix in New Zealand.

"It's a big incentive for us, even though we know that there will be other games to follow that could change the ladder. But if we can win, it will put pressure on those other sides who are following us and playing later over the weekend."

Great to see him get a run on the wing. I can't actually remember the last time he started a game there. Will be interesting to see what happens when Harry gets back if Gooch has a big game this weekend.

Harry should have to earn his place in the team just like every other player

Do people actually watch the game or just read the score.

He had a poor game, completely fucking up about 5 possessions forward. Yes he scored a nice goal, beating the keeper near post but he was far less convincing than Novillo.

Not a starting player yet. Needs more time.

his 1st half was worthy of a dragging

Not being a smartarse, but yes, they do, but it's quite often that we see different things. That's the reason for half the debates on here.

Yeah true.

Defensively he tracks back harder then Novillo, so if you're looking at it from that point of view then sure, you can see him staring more often against certain formations.

He had two totally different games. I probably would have given him the hook at half time (way too conservative with his touches and poor crosses etc), but he was like a different player in the 2nd half. Definitely keeps his spot.

It looked like he just played like the rest of the team really. First half sketchy and 2nd half in the zone.

Could it have been the manager's fault maybe?
