It finished 1-1. Kewell (84) and McGarry (88).

Migliorini - playing, what, Serie C or D? Comes on and shows our blokes how to play immediately. As did Madaschi. That's why I'm keen on Mifsud - someone different from a different background who's got a bit of spark in him.

Anyway, we didn't actually lose!

Harry Kewell scores in heated friendly between Perth Glory and Melbourne Heart

BRADEN QUARTERMAINE The Sunday Times September 14, 2013 6:34PM

HARRY Kewell scored as a 10-man Perth Glory drew 1-1 with Melbourne Heart in an ill-tempered pre-season friendly in Mandurah.

A windswept Hyundai Stadium was a world away from Brazil as Kewell took another step on the long road he hopes will lead to a third World Cup appearance next year.

The Socceroos legend, 35 next Sunday, has not played for Australia for 15 months but is hoping he can force himself into calculations with a strong season in the A-League.

Kewell beat Glory goalkeeper Danny Vukovic with a stinging low shot in the 84th minute after being teed up from a free kick on the edge of the penalty area by Mate Dugandzic.

Glory midfielder Steven McGarry equalised with a quality long-range strike in the 87th minute.

Referee David Bruce dished out a remarkable nine yellow cards, including two to Glory defender Steve Pantelidis who received his marching orders before half-time.

Heart captain Kewell and Glory counterpart Jacob Burns, former teammates at Leeds, had a running verbal battle and Kewell made no apologies for playing in such a feisty spirit.

"There's no such thing as a friendly match and that's what people don't understand," Kewell said.

"When you get out there, it's full on and yes we do argue, we do fight, we do compete and that's why we're footballers.

"But we shake hands after and just walk off."

Tempers had begun to rise following a series of robust tackles from both sides and frustrations boiled over after a crude tackle from Heart defender Aziz Behich on Perth's Josh Risdon late in the first half.

It sparked an all-in scuffle that saw Vukovic and Pantelidis booked for their part in the retaliation, while Behich received a yellow card for the tackle that sparked the melee.

Kewell then pleaded with Bruce to allow Pantelidis to stay on the pitch, telling him it was only a friendly.

Heart defender Patrick Kisnorbo appeared to grab Vukovic by the throat but escaped penalty.

It was difficult to read much into the form of either side given the extreme conditions.

In comical scenes, the wind was so strong it regularly blew the ball away as players attempted to take free kicks.

The referee asked the captains if they wanted to call the game off mid-way through the second half, but they elected to continue and the crowd was rewarded with the late goals.

McGarry said the match was still a valuable hit-out as Glory continues preparations for its season opener against Adelaide United on October 13.

"Even though the conditions weren't conducive to sexy football, we tried to play football as much as we could," he said.

"It was interesting and there were a lot of little battles all over the pitch and we didn't want to lose the game."

Very pleased to hear those comments from Kewell. They are a welcome breath of fresh air from our last 3 seasons. It looks like Kewell wants to give the team a real fighting spirit (same with Kisnorbo, although maybe too literally in this match).

Hopefully with this attitude we won't be as inconsistent and complacent as we've been previously.

Spiteful clash ends all square

September 15, 2013

Brad Elborough, Perth

A 1-1 draw in a friendly A-League game between Perth Glory and Melbourne Heart was marred with incidents that brought a swag of yellow cards.

And despite conditions not conducive to top-level soccer, it was new Heart captain Harry Kewell that provided the spark for an eventful final 10 minutes.

Kewell scored his first goal for the Heart from general play, rewarding the crowd that braved the windy and showery conditions at Hyundai Stadium in Mandurah, one hour south of Perth, to see the Australian football star.

The wind was so bad in the second half that it tough for both sides to run their set plays.

The ball was often held up in the gales and often pushed by the breeze back in the direction from which it came.

During the second half, referee David Bruce asked Kewell and Perth captain Jacob Burns if they wanted to call the game off.

But in the 83rd minute, Kewell belted the ball - that was nudged to him from a Mate Dugandzic free kick - under the Glory wall and to the left of diving Perth keeper Daniel Vukovic.

It looked to be enough for the Heart to equal the ledger of its week in WA, after it lost 1-0 to Perth during the week.

But Steven McGarry provided the equaliser just four minutes later when he struck a long ball from about 5metres outside the box into the left-hand side of the net.

One minute later he picked up the eighth of nine yellow cards handed out by the referee. The Glory played the second half with just 10 men after Steve Pantelidis was shown his second yellow card just before the break.

Melbourne's Aziz Behich instigated the incident with a tackle on Josh Risdon. Pantelidis and Vukovic took exception to the tackle and remonstrated with Behich.

All three players went into the book.

Whatever Vukovic did was enough to upset Patrick Kisnorbo, who was visibly upset with the keeper.

Kisnorbo, a former Socceroo defender, looks a great pick-up for the Heart in the early part of the pre-season and controlled the back half in tough conditions.

Kewell confirmed after the game that he still had his sights set on playing for Australia in next year's World Cup in Brazil, although admitted that the Mandurah pitch was a long way from Rio.

''Like I have said from day one, I think everyone in my team, everyone in Perth's team, everyone in the whole A-League is fighting for a position for the World Cup,'' the new Heart captain said.

''Everyone is going to be playing extra well this year to put their name in the hat, and I am no exception. It all starts with small steps.''

At least we didn't loose and we scored, kept a clean sheet when paddy was on, the Italian sounded like he put a good shift in, feeling good about the team for the first time since Orlando went down, get the Maltese messi signed to bang in some extra goals and top 4 is not out of the question
