I'm anglo, but when I talk about A-League or VPL or Water Polo to my friends most assume that i'm some sort of weird european ethnicity, so when they ask i usually say that i'm Croatian. What can I do / say to make the illusion better?

Well you could change your Political Leanings/ Username/ Display Pic for a start.

Slovenia's President was a former member of the League of Communists

Kosovo's government is centre left

Serbia's ruling coalition are all left leaning parties  

Montenegro's ruling coalition are left leaning

Bosnia's government is confusing but appears to be left leaning

And most of these parties either in coalition or government are the direct heirs of the Yugoslavian League of Communists and Communist Parties

Pretty much leaves Maco as the only conservative Balkan country.

Tell me more about how the Balkans aren't left wing Cadete.

Thanks mate. Unlike you however i don't make vague generalisations about people's ideologies based on where they have come from despite pointing out the ability for people from the balkans to be left wing, so i probably wouldn't go to any community centre of any ethnicity and make such a comment. Yeah, i'd accept that probably the older generation of croat-australians are right wing and have predominantly fled communist Yugoslavia and are likely to be opposed to left-wing beliefs.  But i'm significantly younger than that and, unsurpirsingly for my generation, actually able to think for myself and make decisions not based on the beliefs on my theoretical Croatian immigrant parents.  So get lost buddy

Also, what says that i can't have been a more recent Croatian migrant? All i said was that i was Croatian. That could mean anything. Could mean American Croatian, or Latino Croatian.

But i would like to point out that based on some more of my excellent research, Croat-Australians that have entered politics and are listed on wikipedia (good source) are fairly well split between both the ALP and Liberal Party, and even the Democrats.

TBH i'm fairly sure most people i'm talking to don't know the intricate details of aussie-croat history as it is if they believe a pale blonde guy is croat in the first place so it doesn't really matter what political affiliation i am, or how recently i've arrived and from where. I live right near Kew and can confirm there are a lot of Greeks there. Whether they have rental properties in the area as well who knows. But knowing how they operate, they probably charge their own kids rent to live in the house, just like the Aussies do.
