  1. I was in PNG in 1998 when they had the Aitape Tsunami. Fortunately I was in the Highlands though and thus well removed from the event. “Fun fact” is it became the then most thoroughly studied Tsunami in history and helped build the understanding of them. I guess the mention is topical as I’m currently reading Hugh Davies “Aitape Story” right now. I could give you some suggestions of places to live for avalanches or tsunamis (spoiler-Melbourne is out) but can’t really help you re-meteor strike I’m afraid.
  2. I have to say I think the 0-6 away has been underplayed. For those of us who were there, in the enemy den, where we’ve had a shit record, was next level. One of those rare moments when you think, this would be be a pretty good time to fucking die.
  3. But now the press (I have some sympathy, China is opaque) are now saying they are likely to let it fail. It seems the truth is no one knows in the west what will happen, but whatever it is the impact will be big.
  4. It seems the CCP are going to bail out Evergrande. Given some of the stuff I’ve read, they may have felt little choice, aside from the immediate impact of those owed the $300Billion it seems there are quite a few only slightly more soluble competitors. If this is true they wouldn’t survive the fall out either. The impact of all that on the Chinese economy and thus the people would have been severe and thus a threat to the security of the powerful. What happens from here will be fascinating. In the early 90s the Japanese banking system was in a similar mess. It was papered over and tidied up behind the scenes, but it was also the end of the Japanese economic miracle and they’ve never been the same economic force again.
  5. Insane season. Record streak without a win (mostly losses), but besides those 2 goals also the year (I think) of The Williams Goal at the death vs Sydney when we came back with 10 to win and The Engelaar Goal from his own half.
  6. Thinking about it we had as many glory moments last season as in the club’s previous entire existence! Off the top of my head: 0-6 away 7-0 at home Jamo for the Plate Galloway for the Dunny Seat
  7. Inspired by @DukeVadercsn I suggest everybody updates their favourite moments (list as many as you like).
  8. What a moment that was! The whole of the southern end went birko. A great time to be alive!
  9. Personally I think we’ve moved on. We already have O’Neill, Griffiths and Gomulka in the position. The first two are clearly better options.
  10. Had to post it somewhere! What concerns me is that their authoritarian government may soon have a lot of unhappy citizens. The text book response in this situation is for that government to “blame foreigners” for something to distract the populace. In this scenario I hope they don’t do something insane like invade Taiwan.
  11. The biggest story around the globe right now should be the looming collapse of Evergrande. This is going to cause massive ructions to the Chinese economy with regional political fallout. Strap In.
  12. He caught a train through Germany when he was a kid. green line to @kingofhearts
  13. On the face of it, it seems a weird signing (replacing a box to box midfielder with a player more known as a second striker or perhaps a #10), however CFG do their homework. I suspect we’ll restructure a little and Manuel will play further forward than Luna did. Having said that, not many players of his pedigree (at his age) in the A League. He should add a touch of class to our line up.
  14. I’m sure he’s a good player. I hope he realises he’ll be expected to play as a box to box midfielder in the summer heat, meeting the standard set by a Uruguayan beast.
  15. Your logic is impeccable. It’s worth remembering this is the A League rules. Melbourne City will also have a budget, which may still have room in it, or it may not. We all think they have 600k left for the “New Luna” but who knows. In the last few years we’ve got better at scouting. 600k doesn’t guarantee a fantastic player (see Koren) but the odds of getting a poor one diminish. Im hopeful, put it that way.
  16. Not just Wellington, Perth and Redcliffe too. All three teams may have to relocate to Australia, if they and their opponents can’t get weekly quarantine exemptions.
  17. I’m all for it, but it just makes the salary cap look even more absurd. Why have something that requires so many exemptions to function properly?
  18. I would perhaps sum it up as “we both think each other’s position is absurd”.
  19. Cases are irrelevant in my view. it’s the hospitalisation breakdown that’s most interesting. That’s why I think unless you have a health or religious obstacle you’d be a mug* not to be vaccinated. * I support society allowing people to do stupid things though, like: *smoke *be a tard *not get vaccinated
  20. Ultimately there are a few things that the self appointed protectors forget or ignore: 1. You have to die of something and you will 2. whilst you’re not dead, you do actually want to live, not merely exist 3. locking up our kids is robbing them of their present and indeed perhaps their future 4. no one will force people to go outside and mingle if the rules are relaxed or abandoned. 5. There is risk in so many things, it’s just people are used to those other risks, so they ignore them.
  21. The most amazing thing about this thread is that @kingofheartsbottom of a beer glass musing was actually taken seriously!
  22. Got the win in Hanoi. Based on the “highlights” not a lot to write home about, but the points are important. If we were in any doubt, qualification with the players at our disposal will be challenging.
  23. I’m struggling here. I’ve signed up again but it seems with that link you have to renew at the same time (and I renewed earlier). Have I missed something or do I need to call the club?
