  1. Thursday night it is getting announced but whether or not it comes out into media until Friday is yet to be seen

I'm 100% that we have signed this person

You're 100% certain that we've signed someone - yet you don't know who it is.

Going out on a limb here. Jeepers.

  2. like i said on another thread last night, on soccer stopage time JD gave me the impression that we may in fact not sign any more players.

RECRUITING a striker was a priority, but the club wouldn't necessarily fill the two spots open on its roster.

as stated in the article above, it backs up what i heard. I hope we do sign at least another striker, IMO we have to throw everything we've got at this season, the club has done very well recruiting this off-season, let's hope they don't take short cuts now. Nope, it really doesn't back you up at all.

"Recruiting a striker is a priority" cannot be conveniently ignored.

Not sure why you've got your panties in a knot about us not signing any more players. We'll definitely sign a striker, even if we don't fill our fill our visa slots.

  3. Australian-born striker Christian Esposito, who just turned 23 a few weeks ago, is apparently interested in coming to the A-League.

He has effectively played all of his football in Italy. Esposito has largely been a player on the books of Serie B clubs, but he has played most of his football on loan at lower Italian clubs.

Apparently around 2009 AC Milan were interested in him.

A number of young Australian strikers who have European experience are available at the moment, like this guy and Brent McGrath. Either IMO would be good additions to Heart. With young players like these two, though, you can't really be sure that they are 'proven' talents. But Babalj wasn't a proven talent when we started playing him regularly either, and I'll always be pleased that Heart backed Babalj and helped him develop as a footballer.

I'd like to see Heart sign a promising young Australian striker and a more experienced foreign striker. I reckon that would be the best way to fill our 23 spots going into the season. That would give us Macallister, a young Australian striker and an international striker. The international would probably be the default starter, and the young striker could possibly get a good amount of substitute appearances (being subbed on around the 60 to 70 min mark) and hopefully several starts across the season. If DMac has a strong pre-season, similar to his previous pre-season, and looks like a good option throughout the season, then I wouldn't mind him being in the mix either.

But that's not promising though is it? What a massive unnecessary risk, given that we NEED a striker. Normally I absolutely love your input mate, but I reckon D-Mac, Hoff and the history of us having old fuddy duddies has deluded your thinking on this one. I agree it'd be good to get a young aussie with potential, but not this dude.

  4. Look at Brisbane bears in afl 15 years ago they were poorly set up and had to merge with fitzroy, where now days GWS and Gold Coast won't be going anywhere because they've been set up well even through they have low fan base.

I'll back you in here Cactii. That's actually a decent call.

  5. Don't think you have to suddenly unearth 36 brand new Australian A-League players who no-one has ever heard of before.

For example, a new club could have given Velaphi first-team football and we could have had Bray as our reserve GK. There's Garcia and Neill looking for clubs. Add players like Nikas, Konyit, Govas, Konstantinidis, Taseski...and you've got the basis of a fair squad. And there's plenty more players I haven't even heard of. And it's not as if we're short of talented NYL players - there's just not enough room in the senior squads to accommodate them once they turn 21.

I accept that there might be a slight dilution of talent, but I doubt it would be really measurable. And IMO the increase in actual football would be more than enough compensation for the fans.

NONE of those players ADD anything to the A-League. They are WORSE than what is currently there. Hence, two new teams would DILUTE the League. It doesn't get much simpler than that. You are actually agreeing with me with your logic.

  6. That's just horrible logic. We can't even fill our roster with decent Australian talent, how the fuck would two more teams do it???

There are many state league players out there that are very capable of playing in the a-league, the problem is with the limited squad sizes and salary cap, teams aren't willing to take the risk of giving them a chance. If there were only 2 more teams for example, that's potentially 36 new AUSTRALIAN players that will be playing in the a-league.

It would force a-league teams to look more seriously at signing players from state leagues and youth teams, which will lead to many of them given a chance, and sometimes they only need one chance. I'm definitely no expert when it comes to state level football, but I reckon I know enough about it. I really, honestly, at my core and in my bones DO NOT feel like there are 35 or 30 or any more than a handful (if that) of A-League level talent at state level. I feel really strongly and without badgering anyone, I'd implore you to reconsider this view.

That's probably as nice as I can say it.

  7. That's fair enough Nate, you can believe that and you may be right. But if you are, can you explain to me why there are currently still duds running around? We didn't keep Hoffman on because we like his personality (although sometimes I wonder). We believe that there aren't any better alternatives out there. I believe this to be the case too.

I don't know if you can judge the class of the A-League by the presence of Jason Hoffman, otherwise you'll judge the Premier League by Titus Bramble. If that's what you've concluded from my post, I conclude your IQ must be extremely low, or you're trying to shit stir.

    It's called an example.

  9. Well we did blood/provide opportunities to unproven young Australian talents such as Marrone, Behich, Good, Hamill, Walker, Redmayne and Goodwin but alright.

Ugh. You're not getting it. Right now, take 35 players from lower leagues and imagine two new teams. You're saying that would make the competition stronger??? No way in hell.

  10. I never used a reference to crowds in the 90's.

All im saying is crowds do fluctuate in the AFL depending on how sides are going. That's why I made the reference to the Demons Kangaroos game saying if they were in the top half of the ladder a much more significant crowd then just 16000 would have been their.

The original discussion point was the "cactus" saying crowds half when teams are going bad and "Morphine" saying it couldn't be further from the truth.

All I'm saying is though I don't think a teams attendances halve, definitely not. But there is some fluctuation when performances and results aren't going to plan

There's a minimal effect sure. Conversation's already been had, but I stand by my rebuttal that AFL attendance figures categorically do not halve in size based on form.
