@bt50 great call on Madaschi. Our defence was still average with him in the side. Our success during that period was due to our attack, particularly Duga and Thommo. Its no coincidence that the most successful part of the Heart era was when Matt Thompson played as an attacking midfielder. I still get angry when I remember that JVS and JA both forced him into defensive roles.

- Kamau and Brandan are completely nullified when they can't beat their direct opponents with pace.
- Brandan, Bruno and Cahill are all finishers, we lack a creator (hopefully its Colazo)
- The number of times Brattan, Retre and Kilkenny had the ball 25 yards out and didn't know what to do was very concerning. Despite having 5 or 6 players ahead of them, none of them are making runs to receive the ball.
- We have no attacking structure, no system (classic JVS). Every player is making it up as they go along, its the football manager equivalent of ticking the 'free role' box for every forward and midfielder.
- A back 3 can work, but a back 3 without wingbacks or a disciplined defensive midfielder will not work against 3 forwards.
- The back 3 is also hindering us from playing out from the back. The rest of the team pushes so far forward that our defenders run of passing options and keep going back to Dean 'the distributor' Bouzanis who then kicks long or into the crowd.
- We are lucky that Brisbane only have Holman as their 10, if they had Castro we would’ve lost by plenty. There was so much space for their midfield to operate in front of our back 3 and so much space for Brisbane on the wings it was disturbing.
- On the subject of Holman, I wonder how many more games of 0 goals, 0 assists and 10 over-hit passes it will take before the media stop blowing smoke up his arse. Industrious but ineffective.

Both teams have a few out. Disappointed not to see Franjic in the squad, I hope its only managing his workload.
Adelaide's defence looks solid, especially centrally, much stronger than Victory. Kamau vs Gooch could be crucial.

Last season we scored more goals than any other team in A-League history but our defence was woeful. How does JVS fix this? He plays without a holding midfielder and with only one centre back.
Oh look, we just conceded 3 goals at home against a team with its best striker missing.
I am eager to see what his next move is. Maybe no centre backs at all. That will surely fix the defence.

I kept hoping the rumours weren't true. Horrible news.
Good luck with your rehab Corey.

I have been told that the new managing director, Mark Kingsman, is a yes man. He was appointed by the Bakries after being recommended for the job by Aloisi and Moore. His appointment means that Aloisi and Moore now have control over all decisions made by the Roar.
Given that those two don't really know what they are doing, and that there is already discontent within the playing group, it should be an interesting season for Brisbane.

Read an article a little while ago explaining that Bolts running style doesnt have the same characteristics as other cheats using his non explosive start and the way his stride gets longer the further he runs as reasoning.
(Could be bullshit but seemed more trustworthy than a bunch of soccer hooligans on an internet forum)
The start of a sprint is more about technique than the rest of the race. The 100m is regarded as a more technical event than the 200m, which is regarded as the event for 'power runners'. Bolt's power is so ridiculous he can make up for his poor starts in just a few seconds against known dopers.
Bolt aside, the majority of the best Jamaican sprinters in the last decade have tested positive. (Blake, Powell, Carter, Mullings, Cambell-Brown, Fraser-Pryce)

Looking purely at the stats he played okay, despite being subbed early. 75 passes @ 84%, with 4 key passes, 3 crosses, 1 tackle, 4 interceptions. and only dispossessed once.

@Jacques Le Cube there is another article (the world game?) saying how Cobb didn't make an effort to re-sign sponsors and how they only have 2 men and their doc signed up as members. What would your contact say in regards to those accusations?
In regards to the pre-Ange roar, I'll just add a few random comments (I was a supporter at that time) to add a bit more detail.
Miller in his first season was the best player in the league. He had a hernia though, needed an op and then never played at the same level after. (For what it's worth he came across as a real wanker off the field).
Malcolm was selected as a regular starter by Farina despite being one of the worst performers in the league.
Moore was an Ok performer.
there were rumours that "cranky" would go drinking with players (presumably these guys.)
I haven't got any inside info on the claim re' sponsors. However, Roar's main sponsor, Steadfast, still has another year to run on their contract.
And yeah, Moore was good on the field, Miller was great (but fat) and Malcolm was abysmal.

Excellent post @Jacques Le Cube, a lot of what you say sounds to be right on the money.
How have you gotten a lot of that information?
Thanks, I know someone pretty close to the situation. They have been drip feeding me info over the last couple of months and it has all married perfectly with what information has been reported in the media.
The entire situation blows my mind on so many levels.
@GreenSeater I've been critical of CFG more than most but this shows how much worse it could be.

I thought I would give a summary of what I have heard around the roar situation for the last couple of Months.
Cobb's consortium and the Bakries had an in principle agreement to sell the license to the Cobb consortium. The Bakries had agreed to pay the Roar's outstanding debts and instilled Cobb as interim CEO.
Cobb spent a few weeks going over the books, doing his due diligence, and found that the Roar was a complete mess, and also that the Bakries had not paid their outstanding debts. Cobb also indicated to the current football department (the 2 Aloisi's and Craig Moore) that they would not be retained by the new owners. Cobb thought there were question marks over John Aloisi's coaching ability and that JA's wage was large enough to afford a highly qualified/experienced overseas coach. More importantly, Cobb wanted to eradicate the 'boys club' culture that had returned to the Roar in the absence of Postecoglou and Mulvey.
The pre-Postecoglou Brisbane Roar was heavily influenced by Craig Moore (the Marquee player at the time). He convinced the club to sign his old drinking buddies from his Rangers days (Charlie Miller and Bob Malcolm) so they could enjoy sunshine, a healthy wage and semi retirement in Brisbane. Postecoglou identified Moore, Miller and Malcolm as the source of the massive cultural problem at Roar and removed them immediately.
As soon as JA was appointed coach at the Roar, he gave the assistant coaching job to his brother and threw his weight behind his friend and former international team mate, Craig Moore, to be football director. For the record, Craig Moore has no tertiary education, no coaching qualifications and no Corporate experience. Cobb knew of Craig Moore's reputation and saw his and Ross Aloisi's appointments as 'jobs for the boys'. Cobb's suspicions were further validated when JA approached Cobb to sign Brett Holman as Marquee (another former team mate of JA and Moore). Cobb declined JA's request as it would've meant that Roar's 2 marquee players would've been Brett Holman and Matt McKay (yet another former team mate of JA and Moore).
With their days numbered, Aloisi and Moore did everything they could to jeopardise the takeover, knowing that they will probably get sacked, or at the very least, their contracts would not be renewed if the takeover went ahead. The first step was leaking to David Lewis at TWG that the football department found Cobb to be unworkable and had issued the owners a 'him or us' ultimatum.
Step 2 was Craig Moore sending himself on a 'scouting trip' to Brazil (gotta make hay while the sun shines!).
The Bakries finally transferred the required money into the Roars account so staff could be paid and debts cleared. The Bakries then moved that money back into their own account, leaving the reported ~$600k shortfall.
Cobb then paid the players wages out of his own pocket, but as soon as that one piece of favourable news for Cobb was reported, Moore leaked to David Lewis at TWG again that Cobb should never have been allowed to work in football in Australia and that the FFA should have vetted him. The 'unamed source' in the below article is Craig Moore.
http://theworldgame.sbs.com.au/article/2016/08/18/axed-cobb-was-never-right-man-brisbane-roar-job
The actions of the football department has split the dressing room. JA has put the protection his reputation ahead of the players getting paid their wages.
Its got to the point now that no player agents will deal with the Roar until the ownership problem is solved. Roar currently cannot sign players.
Cobb resigned from his position and made 1 final 'take it or leave it' offer for the license. As of last night, Cobb withdrew his offer. Aloisi and Moore have ensured their own survival but have almost destroyed the club to do it.
A few numbers:
John Aloisi is on $350k a year at Roar.
It is estimated the the Bakries have lost around $20mil owning the Roar.
Roar had the opportunity to sign Diego Forlan as marquee for the upcoming season at $700k but because of their finances were unable to table a formal offer.

IMO we're looking at the departure of Didulica and the rise of Petrillo.
Maybe, but Petrillo was in charge of recruitment when they signed new contracts. Petrillo said the following when they re-signed, along with Chapman and Retre:
“We’re pleased to have secured these four young talented players with the Club and believe they are players who have a very promising future in the Australian game.
“Melbourne City have made an ongoing commitment to developing young Australian talent, and these players show how exciting the home-grown talent is in this country.”
Maybe this is an indication of the rumoured change in strategy from head office? I do agree that the type of player we are signing has changed significantly since Petrillo took over from Didulica.

certainly a downgrade on Zullo but we need options and competition at the back and we can only choose from players that are available
Yeah, but we have a visa spot free. We had a whole planet of left backs to choose from.

JA has entered self-preservation mode yet again. Leaking to the press to make it look like he is leaving on his own terms.

The salary cap should be kept, and significantly reduced.

Who was taking our set pieces?

I have heard that Craig Moore and JA will be removed from their positions by the new owners. Brisbane are also very serious about signing a big name marquee for the upcoming season.

Just goes to show he really should have gone to a better league
It is disappointing not to see him play in a stronger league but I'm pretty sure that CFG did not consider the many offers that came in for Mooy, they were desperate to get him to Manchester.
CFG expect Melbourne City to provide at least 1 player to the Manchester first team in the 10 years after the acquisition and they know that Mooy will probably be the best player they get from Melbourne during this time. He goes on loan for a season, then spends the next on the fringes of the first team.
By bringing Mooy to Manchester, the big wigs at CFG are validating their earlier decision to acquire Melbourne Heart. When the owners ask what they have to show for the millions they invested in Melbourne, CFG will point to Mooy and say that they at least got 1 player, which was the original metric for success.
Is he good enough to have a significant impact at Manchester City? Probably not. Is he good enough to be playing in one of the big four leagues right now? Absolutely. Unlike some others I don't see what Mooy has to gain by spending yet another year in a league that is clearly beneath him.
But I will still constantly check results and match reports in the hope that he is dominating for Huddersfield.

I think JVS will try to make the 3--5-2 work this season.
With emphasis on try.
If he is planning on playing 3-5-2, why have we got 5 wingers in the squad? Assuming Timmy has signed, we have to play 2 up front. But if we are going to play with wide midfielders (an assumption based on our squad so far, including Brandan) that only leaves a flat 4-4-2. But where does our marquee number 10 fit then? I have no idea how we will line up.
Unless Kilkenny is our marquee...
As has been mentioned many times, we need a CB, LB and an AM, but we only have 2 foreign spots left and no standout Australians in any of those positions. Maybe we are chasing James Meredith for LB? Who knows.

CFG know if they do things their way they will be successful on and off the field. It's worked in Manchester, and will soon work in every other club.
I'm not sure if it is that simple, Manchester City is the only CFG team where football is the priority.
With regards to Melbourne City, branding and exposure are more important to CFG than anything that happens on the pitch.

The JvS thread
in Melbourne City
Posted
When CFG formally appointed JVS, Scott Munn was interviewed on radio (I think SEN). He said that CFG thought they were very lucky to have someone with his philosophy, European experience, and local knowledge already at the club. And that CFG were desperate to keep him. Given the lack of a interview process and the ridiculous annual salary that JVS is on ($750k?), I think its fair to say that CFG thought he was a great coach and were desperate to keep him in Melbourne (the stability factor probably helped at bit too). I assume there wasn't any performance based element to the contract because CFG haven't shown that sort of diligence, foresight or attention to detail in any coaching appointment they have made at Melbourne City. Often, performance based contracts for coaches have an option for another year or 2 if certain criteria were met, from what I understand, JVS's contract does not.
I assume that he has kept his job (at least in part) because no-one at CFG wants to admit that they wasted over $2m of the Melbourne City budget on a dud coach and that they should've conducted more thorough process.
