  1. Really Guthrie is doing more then his job. He was pick 23 and in hindsight it would only be Luke Parker and perhaps Paul Puopolo that have been more worthwhile.

The lack of development of Horlin-Smith, Smedts and to a lesser extent Caddy and Duncan that is stopping Geelong from being a threat to the leagues top teams.

Also, if there was a worse player that played AFL football on the weekend then Jordan Murdoch I'd be very surprised.

Yeah - I was moaning to Baz all day about Murdoch not going near it... problem is he does have the speed and polish to be a League Footballer who could win you a tight last term of footy. We all remember how longer Steve Johnson took to become Stevie J.

I normally spend all day complaining about Smedts except he was suspended yesterday, he clearly was shopped around and nobody wanted to take up that last year of his contract because there is no way Taylor Hunt deserved to go before him... his attitude is poor and the amount of clangers he performs is like a back pocket in the early 90's.

Caddy is overrated by Cats fans as well... he has some good hard to find qualities like natural ball sense and his best ability of keeping his feet in tackles but a lot of his clearances from bounces are rushed short kicks which get you nowhere these days.

Duncan has always been overrated... would be a Good Flanker in say the 2009 team but his not anywhere near a 2009 Team Midfielder.

How long did it take Stevie J to come on? I remember watching him waaay back at Skilled and I always thought he looked a jet.

He was quite flashy for a long period and never consistent.

As a side note I hope Menzel can come back from his knee reco's, plays like Stevie J.

He started reasonably well for a kid and played very good memorable game early on to suggest his talent when he kicked 4 goals in a surprise win against a GF bound Collingwood at the MCG prior to when we started to make the finals as a young side.

However when we started making finals as the Young Cats/Young Saints era in the Mid 2000's he was very very inconsistent, could be very one handy day, then shit and cost us a number goals by trying to do to much the next, and even find himself outside of the side. He eventually almost famously ended up traded to Collingwood before he was retained but then banished from training with the team for the first few weeks of 2007 for the infamous drink driving incident. This proved the turning point of his career and he literally came back a completely different player.

The funny thing is that despite a Norm Smith Medal, he was still the biggest whipping boy in the Standing Section of KP well after 2007... it was only probably towards the end of the 2008 Season that the grumbling really started to stop about him and Mooney (Which never truly stopped amongst some).

TBH out of the Geelong players I have seen play since like 1989 who have ended up (or will end up) def considered as a Club Champion by Cats Fans... Johnson is def the one to have risen from the lowest standing amongst supporters.

NOTE: I dont even put Menzel into squad calculations when I talk Geelong as I know sadly his never going to recover and I basically see Vardy the same way.

Interesting. Although I've loved ripping into Geelong and their fans for as long as I can remember, Johnson has always been one of my favourite players in the league.

Also, it is a shame about Menzel and Vardy. In my opinion, they're your two most talented young players.

    Agreed - They were...

Menzel before he did his injury was in the process of dismantling Hawthorn in a quarter and a half of finals footy as a kid.

But that's footy or what we Cats fans refer simply to as: Paul Lynch.

Ha, Paul Lynch was my old mans favourite player. Remember him dismantling North one Friday Night. Had more soft tissue injuries than you have had posts.

We're turning this thread into Geelong 1990 and beyond. I'm enjoying it.

  3. To get technical, Perth will not be put down to 7th until after the conclusion of the regular season. I believe the bet was if we finish 5th or higher so it really depends on the definition of when the season finishes? Regular season or including finals?

That's what I was thinking... but obviously I will pay up.

TBH I am just really looking forward to see this bloke who called me a "Internet Warrior" in person... despite nobody knowing who the fuck he is.

Haha, this alone is almost worth a flight over.

  4. Was asked to take more photos with fans than any other player after the match. Who would have thought he'd be the most in-form keeper in the league (8 clean sheets from 15 games I believe) and would be among our best players and now probably our most popular player.

Signed merely as a back-up keeper. Done extremely well to capitalise on the opportunities given to him this season.

    The man's a legend.

TBH the Tando chant must give him a big boost in confidence when belted out by the whole terrace rather loudly.

In particular when suspended and Redmayne is in goals.

  5. I thought Safuwan played well and kept Burns stiffled for most of the game,he made it very hard for Burns to cross the ball from the right. In my humble opinion he deserves at least a one year contract.

Would be happy to see Saf get a 2 or 3 year deal. In a salary capped league not all Visa players are going to be superstar. Safuwan is more then serviceable and a threat inside the box. His also at a great age.

  6. After playing Tuesday morning in arguably the biggest game of his life, to then travel more then 24 hours and 3 planes his efforts on Friday night were truly remarkable. The praise this guy gets will never be oversold.

  7. Ladbrokes have a money back if your team kicks the first goal but lose offer for round 1 of AFL, surely that's (who scores first goal) pretty much 50-50 and therefore possibly better than the Sportsbet offer, in that if you lose you have close to a 50% chance of getting a refund.

I agree this would be a slightly better chance of a refund. Possibly around 40%. I still think Sportsbet's promotion is more enticing seeing it lasts for 8 rounds not 1.

  8. http://theworldgame.sbs.com.au/article/2015/04/01/sage-vows-axe-glory-ceo-if-new-salary-cap-allegations-are-upheld

Glory may lose points I would be surprised if they were to lose all there points. They may be docked enough to finish 5th or 6th

If found guilty there is no way Glory will finish 5th or 6th. They will be deducted sufficient points for them to miss the finals. There is no way a team can blatantly cheat, found guilty, then still win the championship.

  9. I've just noticed that for each of our four remaining matches Brisbane play the day before. So we will know how close they are to us each time.

I still think that in the end it's going to be horribly tight.

Honestly can't see us slipping out of 6th though, considering the ACL games they have to play.

    I'd bloody hope not.

I booked RDO for the Friday of the first week of finals about 2 months ago just in case we made it. Spewin that we probably wont know who we would be playing earlier cause flights are gonna be super cunt expensive being short notice

Will be Sydney or Perth most likely, but there's still a chance for a Derby Final.

Donth think Adeliade is a possibility either?

Kind of hoping for either Sydney Adeliade or Victards. If its Wellington or Perth, i wont be able to make the trip

I also will be making any trip bar Perth and Wellington.

  10. William Hill giving $100Million to anyone that can correctly guess the order of afl ladder. $5 per entry.

Essentially just like buying a lotto ticket but is a pretty cool little special.

Had a little look at this and did some numbers on it. I estimated the likelihood of tipping all 18 in the correct order to be around 1 in 6 billion.Yes but the likely hood of picking 18 isnt just based on randomness. You have some knowledge of the top 8 based on the teams ability so I reckon its more like 100 million to 1Yeah, you more or less know where everyone will finish within four or five places.

I'd love to see the equations that people (Tesla plz) could come up with to determine the true odds of this. It's pretty simple, it's just 18! (unless I'm missing something)

Given that there are 9 numbers of 10 or more being multiplied, and then another 9 numbers, it's definitely beyond the billions.

6.4 quadrillion according to the google calculator.

As HeartFc said the probability of picking who finishes top is better then a 1 in 18 chance. I estimated it to be 1 in 3. Each position is different and obviously it's easier to pick 1st then say 10th.

It's something that's quite hard to explain of a soccer forum but even if you were a 50 50 chance of picking each position correctly it's chances are still 1 in 130000
