  1. Watching the replay. That disallowed goal was absolute bullshit.

  2. Agree on Glover. Could be a big redemption arc this season, especially given he's out of contract at the end of the season. The thing I really noticed was how strong our front press was. Last season it'd be JMac isolated like 90% of the time but last night we regularly had 4-5 players closing down the Western half backs. Idk if it's sustainable but I loved it. PK deserves credit because our game style really did look different.

  3. I agree, Glover deserves a fair bit of positive recognition for last night. I have justifiably criticised him but I think he won us that game with 3 big stops when needed. We know how difficult it is when Western get ahead. Passing was sharper than last year with more willingness to go forward. Berisha looks good. Made some positive runs that weren’t picked up by team mates. Hope we can lift our game to get on his wavelength as he will do damage if we move the ball to him quickly. Forward line still a bit frustrating but Maclaren more involved that last year against WUFC. Lam at the back was passing to his feet and using him to link up, something that we have always failed to manage. Positive signs though I think the league will be much stronger this year.

  4. The backline was better because, unlike last season, they weren't having to deal with constant turnovers from our midfielders. We've certainly missed Aidan O'Neill

  5. IMO the point that administrators fail to grasp is that support for our game here is small at best and association football is not the number one game. If you're in Europe or various other countries you can afford to piss off a percentage of fans because there's plenty waiting in the wings to replace them. That is not the case here - if you piss off 10% of the regulars then your attendance falls by 10%, and it's hard to get them back once their habit is broken. IMO VAR is not the only example. Sanitising the atmosphere by putting the squeeze on active has had the same effect.

  6. We would have lost at least 3k on the attendance purely as a result of the rain we had yesterday imo. Its an excuse absolutely, but its also the reality.

  7. Are you being sarcastic? Poor crowd for a 'derby' and the fact both these teams were the best 2 teams last season. We aren't growing at all...

  8. thought Glover was great last night. given all the criticism (which has been certainly due in a number of cases), he deserves the recognition for when he plays well. fingers crossed this is the start of something really really positive . backline too was great, given two new additions, a youth product who has played at fb only on occasion / is still developing and our skipper as a CB / out of position. Valon Berisha looks to finally be that number 10 we have craved for; ability to turn a game on a dime with his passing and (IMO more importantly given our system) the ability to arrive in the box late / in a scoring position. for all the VAR talk about our first goal (the own goal) it shouldn't have mattered since Berisha should have buried his shot instead of sending it over the bar. willing to put that down to a bit of rustiness and him adjusting to conditions in Oz.

  9. That was a good quality big blue last night despite the rain. Those two teams might be the benchmark. I’ve not seen us play at that level for a while.

  10. My thoughts as well, even their goal I still can't see the touch that let it stand, it should have been offside, maybe there is better footage I haven't seen, but from the replays it looks that way. Yep, Glover did well, hopefully we see a turn around from last season. They all did pretty well, even Hall was good when he came on.

  11. Please also remember that not everyone comes from Metro Melbourne and lives within walking distance of a railway station. We do, and we weren't home until 11.00 last night. If you live a two-hour drive away, as one of our gang does, and the rain is pissing down until 3.00 p.m. it's understandable if you make a decision to do something else. As @Mr MOrightly points out we've hardly had the pre-season or made the signings that would make last night's match a must-go. Further just because you're a member doesn't mean that you can or will go to every single home match. I recall Scott Munn revealing some quite surprising figures about the percentage who attended any particular match. And there are also members whose membership doesn't cover every single match anyway. 3 of our gang have downgraded to the 9-match membership this season becasue of lingering COVID concerns. I don't resile from the opinion that last night's attendance was OK.

  12. Yeah perhaps. We should be getting 10k at least for these games. 7.5k is a Melb City usual home game attendance against interstate teams. Another team from Melbourne should be drawing well above our average....

  13. So the game highlights are already on YouTube but not on Paramount. These guys really have a care factor of Zero.

  15. Nah I wasn’t near active but I could usually hear them from the wing. Not looking to criticize just a observation

  16. That was the best season opener performance I can remember from us, I expected us to be good but honestly not that good. Western were lucky not to lose that by 3-4 goals in the end. New signings look terrific and the core squad look as hungry as I've seen them. Great cause for optimism, only real concern is the injury front but I'm comfortable with the depth of our squad for now.

  17. What I enjoyed most about home was how he didn't stop running. Went in 100% on all challenges and more often than not won the ball.

  18. Tbh I think the whole incident may be a blessing in disguise. Too many people have forgotten the very good reasons why most NSL clubs were prevented from joining the A League at the start. Momentum has been building for such clubs to join a national 2nd tier with the eventual goal of pro/rel. This should serve as a reminder why they were rightfully left behind and why they should stay there.
