cadete Posted July 30, 2012 Report Share Posted July 30, 2012 (edited) I have no sympathy for any of these individual athletes that choke, just like the swimmers and runners at my school they are largely a bunch of Llyeton Hewitt like blokes that chose these sports as they could not enjoy playing team sports due to being hogs. The amount of cash we waste on these non performing athletes is a joke, at least the sports I follow like Soccer and AFL actually create some revenue for themselves due to the fact people actually want to pay to farken watch them... For example if you had a Swimming Carnival in Melbourne 12 times in 24 weeks I doubt that you went get an ave crowd of 1,000 rocking up throughout this period: Yet we have two to three VPL teams that would average that or over at their home games in MK, SM and even farken HU would come very close in a year the side is performing. It's a highly effective way at showing the strength of a nation to the rest of the world, and whilst being the pinnacle for individual athletes, the only thing that matters by the end is the medal count. Like Cadete said, I would much prefer the money going into the development of other sports, which leads to benefits such as public health, social cohesion, etc. Instead millions are put into a swimming team just so a bunch of drunks at a pub can be proud that we're "farkin 'straya cunt." But it increases the country's profile, probably helps tourism to an extent, increases nationalism which has its benefits as well, etc. The money spent is fairly insignificant compared to what the federal budget is. And yes, there should be more money spent on soccer, but if its going to come at the expense of any sport, the ones that arent played internationally at a high level (eg AFL) (srs, not part of my anti-AFL trolling, just my honest opinion) should be the first to be looked at. And another thing that shits me is can they commentators stopping making up complete shit that these Swimmers are all these kids heroes?!?!? I can tell them right now that if any kid is going to have a Australian sports person as their hero in they are going to be a AFL player, NRL Player, Soccer player or a Rugby Player. FFS more kids would have A League players or NBL players as their heroes than a current Australian swimmer. And most girls would have Taylor Swift, Katy Perry or fucken Lady Gaga over any sportswoman anyway. toogood18 Posted August 2, 2012 Report Share Posted August 2, 2012 The fact it costs us $47 million for every gold medal we win we better win some ,because in simple economic theory when you factor in economic opportunity cost this could be put to much better use in other sports, in particular at grass roots level, to try and get kids off their asses and actually playing sport rather than killing zombies. If this money was put into sports with popularity, i.e. soccer and basketball it could be so much more well spent and benefit so many at local level.
