Derby to start the season

this will be aloisi's biggest match of the season IMO.

I'm expecting victory to be weak in the first few rounds, as they get used to Ange's system of play, which we know involves playing it out of the back. Just like when he first started that way of playing with Brisbane, there were a lot of mixed results and i'm expecting a lot of mistakes to be made in their defence in which we must take advantage of.

The reason it is Aloisi's biggest match is because:

- Needs to prove that he scouted the right visa players

- Has a well-drilled team

- Has got the team playing attractive football

- Has chosen the correct lineup

- Is able to make correct decisions in big games

- Has fixed our defensive problems

- Is able to replace big outgoing players (babalj) with the right player

- Needs to win this match (not only because it's the derby but because it's the opening game of the season which we have never won)

IMO he must show us all these things because it's very important for him to have the support and the confidence of the fans, the board, and especially the players. We seem to be a team that performs on momentum and confidence, so a big win here could set us off to a very good start to the season.

why friday night ffs

Foxtel of course. The same reason we have/had the midweek game.

Hopefully free to air coverage in the next TV rights deal will see better fixturing (regular spacing between home and away games, kick offs that favour supporters rather than TV viewers etc.).

Huge test for us, for all the reasons outlined above. I've heard all the reasons why and that there's still plenty of time before the season etc. etc., but we are a long way from getting our squad sorted, the coaching settled, and so on. AFAIK Fred is still in Brazil. If we're going to sign overseas players then they're going to need time to get here and get settled. Even local players will need time to adjust to a new training regime, new team tactics, etc. So time is slipping away.

Have to say I'd have preferred this fixture to be three or four rounds into the season.

damp squid 0-0 wrote all over it. Cagey game with no team wanting to over commit for fear of making mistakes and losing ground early doors. Derby games should be built up, at least 5/6 rounds in. Not the first game.

A derby weekend would be good, Brisbane vs Central Coast Friday night, Melbourne FC vs Fucktards Saturday night, Western Sydney vs Sydney Sunday arvo. Round 6/7 Hows that for an idea fox sports/ffa ya money grabbing wanks?!

AGAIN$T MODERN FOOT£ALL

not the biggest fan of this, as @spain82 said, a derby needs build up.

it does no way add to the excitement to know that the result of the match will merely be a good or bad lil start to the season, whereas if it was round 6/7 theres a lot more talk on the form and expectations of each team, which all add to the excitement of a derby.

as well as showing that there's only one team in melbourne ;)

Whilst I don't think it's ideal, from a marketing perspective the draw prospect is a winner... massive fixture that ppl want to see straight after other code's seasons have concluded... purely there to entice those not usually partial to soccer other than a socceroos game, but generally an all round sports loving enthusiast towards the round ball game... expect a big lead up in the media for this one if the ffa have some fucking brains

dont see any harm in it tbh. it would start the year of well, plus could attract larger crowds in the following games if it goes well.

The harm is having that first game being as much a stalemate as last season's first derby fixture... The one where we tore shit up for no result and the media beat up that ensured was of that labelling it boring

Simple solution:

1. Have quality striker(s) who can capitalise on created chances.

2. Beat them.

Ahhhhhhhhhhhhhh. :P

As long as we dont lose it will be a solid start to the campaign...

And therein lies the problem. While the free publicity in the build up will be much appreciated, a loss will affect a whole lot more than the campaign and 3 points imo.

We need the headlines Saturday morning like never before and it has to be followed up with a month of solid performances.

The one home game leaves a gaping whole in the bank balance :(
