Uncharterd waters, but fans keep the faith

The devastating finals loss to eventual runner up Perth Glory is well and truly behind us, but we are still four months away from the real action. How do we think the club is performing during the off season? New head coach, players coming, players going and even some backroom moves.

Some fans have been good enough to share their opinions, and here they are.

The first question I asked was if the Heart would improve on their finals debut appearance. Most fans were very realistic with their answers. Overall we will either scrape into the finals, or narrowly miss out. A title seems a long way off, with fans believing player and turnover and backroom staffing changes will have a dramatic player on this.

Whilst it’s very hard to assess the season this far out, somewhere around 5-8 seems likely for the Heart. New signings on and off the pitch should renew the faith of fans, as we look to cement a squad that will take us to another finals campaign.

The second question of player retention proved a very positive one in the clubs favour. Alex Terra was seen as a big loss from a marketing point of view (little terra’s mixed with his infectious personality) but not a massive loss on field. Most fans were happy with the decision of cutting most players, knowing that squad size and budget play big factors in club decisions.

Adrian Madaschi proved he was a much loved player with fans, being described as a big loss, even though he was only ever on a short term contract. Hard working midfielder Wayne Shroj was also mentioned by a few fans.

Heart fans will feel the loss of Eli Babalj on a completely different level, seen by most at the clubs best avenue to goal, and the brightest shining light of the future. The speculation on a move to Red Star is increasing, and will be a bitter pill to swallow for fans if lost to the red and white.

The resigning of Clint Bolton was well received by fans. The back to back player of the year winner has recently signed for one final year at the club, and will play a major role in our season 2012/13 campaign. There were a couple of fans singing the praises of young Andrew Redmayne, and were confused about Bolton staying on for one more year. I can see both sided of this coin, but believe Bolton be great for the future development of Redmayne.

The appointment of John Aloisi has been welcomed by the fans, but on the proviso he has experienced assistant managers surrounding him. Ante Milicic is seen as a huge loss tactically to the club, but ultimately the club are on a winner appointing JA. Quite a few responses were very confident of Aloisi’s when working with our youth players, but some are unsure about working with experienced players. When it comes to off field issues, everyone believes that the naturally charismatic Aloisi will handle this with flying colours. One suggestion was for Miron Blieberg to join the coaching team at La Trobe, a move that would bring years of experience to the table.

Finally I asked everyone which Socceroos star would you choose from captain (and recently released) Lucas Neil, or Melbourne born playmaker Marco Bresciano. Although some greedy fans said they would unashamedly take both, unanimously our national captained was snubbed for local hero Bresciano. Positionally the midfielder would be the smarter choice, as the Simon Colosimo, Curtis Good and Brendan Hamill are all established A-League defenders.

Any move for Bresciano would be unlikely at the moment, as the club look to be more fiscally responsible this season, and Marco is enjoying his time abroad at the moment.

Thanks to all those who responded to my short questionnaire, I’m hoping this will become a regular segment on the MHFC Index.
