Tesla
What's a good anti-virus program these days? Comodo is free and better than most paid options, but for an extra $5/year (so still pretty much free) you can get the pro version which gives you a few small things including a $500 guarantee that your PC wont get raped by a virus. ESET and Kaspersky are also proven solid options.

TBH I dont think the added extras are actually worth $5 (its just the guarantee which they would prob find a way out of if you ever had a claim, and 24/7 support to help with a virus problem but who knows how useful that would be), but still its $5 lol so why not. The free version is already like a paid for internet security. For those thinking, how can a free product be good. Well, just like most software, the money is made from corporations who need to buy like 1000 licences for all their computers. They have a more expensive option for them and thats where they make their money, the free or cheap version for non-business helps build their brand and gather information to help improve the software (so they can sell more to businesses). Failing that: c:>format c: But at work you would have daily backups, backups of the backups, etc. Most people dont so formatting is almost a last resort for them. Furthermore, keeping away from dodgy websites is easier said than done, you dont know where a link is taking you, or whether a legitimate website has been compromised. Keep away from freeware programs? Nothing wrong with the vast majority of free software. Anyone know a website that sells good cheap laptops? In need of one $300-$400 onlinecomputer.com.au is your best bet. Generally they will be the cheapest, but if you find a model you like try googling the model or using staticice.com.au to see if anyone has it cheaper. Recently picked up a laptop from centrecom.com.au which was a very good deal, got it in store as well and they dont seem to charge more in store compared to online, so thats also a good place to have a look. I have a burnt Vidio/Graphics card. Is it easy enough to fix myself? How do I know wht type i will need, etc...? Switching graphics card is very easy. You literally just pull it out and put the other one in, some screwing and unscrewing of screws is also involved. Google it and there should be some guides. Havent kept up to date with computer hardware in years so not sure what the situation is ATM, but there used to be different types of slots eg PCI express, and pretty much any graphics card with that slot type would work. I would imagine Bazzatron knows more about hardware than me. Edited May 1, 2012 by Tesla

Tesla
Actually that one you linked isnt a bad deal, seems to be a typo on there that its Core 2 Duo when its really Pentium B940, which threw me off. Check if its sold at jb hifi or office works as you might be able to get them to beat the price due to their lowest price guarantees. Since d/l it two days ago my computer, which is an i5 with fuck all on it besides an internet browser and word, was running slow as fuck. Constant freezing and endless time booting up. Usually takes no more than 1min. Was taking 5. I was having to hard shutdown all the time as I couldn't even get the TaskManager to come up or the Start menu so as to restart from there. Inb4itwassomethingelse I have done nothing but wordprocessing on the comp since I d/l Comodo 2days ago. No dowloads, no games, no porn even(yes, that's how busy I've been lol). Uninstalled the cunt and now it's working like a dream. So long story short... FUCK OFF COMODO. Kill the cunt with fire.

Might have been doing a scan, but yes it does take more system resources than other options. Thats the price you pay for improved security. Sounds like your computer is faster than my laptop, but I have no problems, unless its doing a scan then its slow. ESET is what I used to use and never had any problems with slowness on that, might be worth checking out the 30 day trial on that and seeing if you like it. MaliMate
The fan on my desktop tower has been making noises for a few months. I usually just give it a little kick and it stops but lately it has been going all out. Should I take it down to the local computer repair store or does anyone know if I can fix this myself by opening it up, cleaning the fan etc.
bazzatron
Yes, open it up clean all the dust off the fan, try it again, if it still makes noises then its probably fucked, not going to stop working, but replace it if the noise is pissing you off. AyeCee
I've checked processes, and there are an absolute fucktonne, but I don't know what's required, and what can be killed with fire. For example, there are 2 csrss.exe running, which one do I destroy? Tbh, I'll probably wipe the entire computer, and load 7 on to it. I was just inquiring as to whether it could be hardware issues, and how I could find out.

Tesla
for $596 that actually isnt too bad, but I'd probably hold on for a good deal on an Intel. Also check for USB 3 before purchasing any new laptop. Its a small thing, but you dont want to be stuck with USB 2 for the next year or two or however long you plan on using the laptop. Tesla
There was a bit of discussion earlier ITT about anti-virus software and security software, if anyone needs some (eg Norton, Trend micro), can get you a very good deal from a good mate of mine who runs a computer repair business, seems to me to be ldss than half the cost of the retail price, 100% legitimate product. Also if you need computer repair or a custom built PC, can pass on his details, personally I wouldnt trust anyone else with my computer repairs as there are a lot of dodgy kunts in that industry.
