Little ruffian like you would have been right in the thick of it. What your thoughts?

Indeed I was, was standing a couple of rows behind where it was let off, and tbh I enjoyed it a lot, fired myself and everyone around me up. What's a terrace come to if a flare is booed? Name me one successful ultras or support group across the world who doesn't employ pyro on big occasions. Like it or not, pyro shows are one of the most common parts of football culture.

And what about the idiots throwing shit from the back or attempting to throw punches at the blokes the police were marching out, they're more deserving of getting the boot than someone standing on a chair or cheering the flare.

The atmosphere of this league is dying, and whilst it's not everyone's cup of tea, pyro is always going to be around thriving active groups.

You are a stupid kid who has obviously never stood/sat on the terraces in England for 20years like me.  I never SAW a flare until I came to Australia.

I admit, it's a Euro/South American  disease.

And those ultra ''ultras''  are *genuinely* scary. People inside and outside the grounds have died in skirmishes over the years, mate. But you won't find that on social media.

Did mummy let you stay up late to spot any flares on TV in the recent Manchester / Glasgow / Liverpool derbies this month?

Do you want to tell any of those season ticketholders in those cities that they lack passion for their team?

I find the Aussie wannabes  like you a piss-weak joke.

Atmosphere is dying because too many people in the terraces are just "instagram hooligans" too busy trying to pretend to be something.

This is the problem with the terrace right now. There are people like you, who are obviously more about the English style of support (which I respect but personally isn't for me), and people like me, who are more enamoured by the Euro or South American style of support. It needs to be stated as to what Melburnians actually are and stand for, because this confused mix isn't helping anyone

^^^^^^ Well I have to admit, I respect your polite reply to my rant. Cheers

I think the two styles can co-exist  but the critical issue is flares.

It brings heat on the club, the game and from the police and media and football authorities.

This heat has decimated Victory and WSW support.  And we cannot afford that.

And really, what do flares add? REALLY? I wouldn't wanna hold one....

Edit: Oh yeah I forgot what civility was

but still, fuck england

There's no reason why the two approaches, indeed a range of footballing cultures can't coexist, and in time create a unique local hybrid. The problem is the flares, and the trouble they cause for soccer in this country. Its something that threatens the existence of the A League.

Racism would be "fuck English people"

I suspect that if I'd used your phrase but substituted Turkey, Greece or Serbia, I'd have had the mods jumping all over me as well as a lot of posters with those backgrounds. And honestly, I couldn't and wouldn't say it, because no country or nationality is worthy of that sort of contempt.

No, he's not doing that, simply pointing out that tolerating what might turn out to be the thin end of a nasty wedge is not the way to go. Although I watched non-league football for the most part, I too saw what happened to English football as per @fensaddler and I don't want our football to go anywhere near what that was like.

I was at the game (Bay 19) and to me Active sounded fine. MrsJW said it was one of our best-ever matches. Crowds will build when we win more consistently and start to resonate with the Melbourne public, which we haven't done so far. We certainly won't attract bigger crowds using flares.

Yep, agree JW. Have sat in 15 for quite a few years(I'm a bit old, and my boys a bit young for active), I thought it sounded good last night(loved that chant about going to school tomorrow after the incident before halftime!). To those there having a crack every home game, thanks, and we hope your back next season. Cheers.

Sorry mate, take every sentence I write with a large hint of bants. I didn't mean to say fuck the country, I meant fuck that style of support.

so unsafe to go to a-league games these days. A flare ripped, for a moment it felt like downtown Mogadishu, can't we have more police at these events, it should be a 1 cop to 1 supporter ratio, would up our average attendance too.

It's incredible how much we have accepted the police state.

Couldn't agree more.

7,000 crowd for a Friday night crowd is fucking abysmal, but let's talk about that one flare that got ripped because clearly that's what's stopping people from going to games!

Even our owners are acknowledging how stale the league has become.

Will always support City etc because I want this sport to reach its potential but far out it's stagnated/gone backwards over the last couple of years.

I understand that people are getting frustrated because it means there'll be tighter restrictions on the terrace next year, but next you won't be able to cough at games and anyone who does will get escorted and get the club fined $50,000 and docked three points.

No cough no party.

Anyway, I think the important part in all this is to acknowledge that we're a very good chance to make it to our first ever Grand Final, and therefore the players need our full support regardless of all this off field stuff.

Would lol if we did make it and it was against Victory. Good memories of what the terrace looked like in that infamous semi final a few years ago at Etihad. Flares, colour and all. It was great, apart from the result.

I think that its also helpful to distinguish between flares and 'smokies'. Whilst smokies do have some falme, they aren't the obvious hazard that flares are

You do realise we're in Australia and not Europe or South America yeah.....

Ripping flares being illegal and all aside, it's not, never has been and largely won't be (at least for a fair while) part of our community for the vast majority of us (either at football games or in the community).

Getting booed, heckled, shit thrown on you and all is representative of the active bay seeing that behaviour (a.) as bullshit / wanting to cast it out, and (b.) something against the best interest and image of the game.

The crowd are reacting to YOUR behaviour. YOUR actions.  What the fuck do you expect when you act like that?

And again this is Australia, where this ultra mentally has never really been part culture. Doesn't belong here in comparison to the models you see overseas, and only acts as a blemish on our game in an era where other big (if not bigger) Australian sports will do what they can (particularly in the media) to fuck our game over.

Pull your fucking head in kids
