First off love the concept.

The afl is an exceptionally entertaining sporting spectacle. Today's freo an tigers game is an example of this. Richmond were in the lead after basically not showing up for three quarters only to lose it at the death. The ability for the unexpected is higher than most games.

in terms of "plasticness" these are some of the oldes football clubs of any code in the world. Essendon collingwood and Carlton have storied pasts as rich as any sporting team in the world

I feel the AFL doesn't quite have the connection that it had in the past. Factors for me are spreading the weekend's fixtures over several days (bring me back the old radio commentary of one match and the frequent "round the grounds" up-dates from the others), the creation of the new clubs, and the move away from the suburban grounds.

I'm not really an AFL person, but I'm less interested than I was in the past.

The AFL is trying too hard to Americanise itself and become more of a gimmicky spectacle than it used to be. It should stick to its traditions more imo. My biggest pet peve is the constant rule changes. This being said I still have to disagree with you. I went to the Essendon vs Geelong game last night and it was a great evening. Two traditionally big clubs fighting it out at one of the best stadiums in the world in front of a big and passionate crowd. Definitely not unappealing. Are you a Collingwood fan by any chance as that would explain the lack of enthusiasm for attending games.

Man I was born and raised a Collingwood fan, lost my interest hard after the Buckley era.

I can acknowledge the history behind the existing clubs and concede the point about being unappealing, true, I maybe watch too little to judge. I still think its current marketing and commercialisation attempts are cringeworthy

After?!? Stickler for wording but isn't he the current coach so there by isn't "after" a bit premature .......

Back on topic, sport is sport; people love sports they grew up with (either as kids or as adults) predominantly thru the blood, sweat and tears invested thereby creating an continually draining emotional closed loop / endless cycle.

Being a country boy growing up, I can understand the draw; mates play (thereby AFL is common talking point) and the / a local team goes hand in hand with what's going on in my community.

At the national level it's similar but on a grander scale.

To put things another way, who in their right mind (assuming people can be objective), would constantly sign up to City given how shite we've been at various stages - particularly if you don't get football? I know part of it for me is the blood, sweat and tears, as well as the many mates I can catch up with for a beer

This thread is just another reincarnation of UOTYH, TTIM, and TTDIM (which are all really the same thing as I've previously stated). It'd basically the opposite of the I Wonder thread, which is the passive aggressive version of those threads, and this is now the all out aggressive version.

Convince me otherwise.

This has a defined goal which is for debate and discussion, unlike the rest of the threads you mentioned which are pretty much facebook-tier thoughts and diary entries

While I agree to an extent, I think this opens up more of a one way dialogue than the above mentioned threads. What I like about this one is that the OP is admitting they are open to have their mind changed (a rare thing in these parts)

more plastic than the A-league

There's a number of things I find cringeworthy about ALeague fans. One of them being the amount of supporters of 10 year old clubs that were created from a report having an obsession of calling everything 'plastic'. (Especially when Melbourne City are the most 'plastic'/ manufactured of them all)

Why doesn't someone convince me that Crowd Behaviour (in particular violence) is worse/just as bad at the AFL/Cricket as it is in the A-League... I would like to hear that argument.

Um what is a "Support Group" and what does it have to do with Crowd Behaviour and Violence?

I can't be fucked going into it so I'll just put my simplified opinion here.

Amongst active support? No comparison. Aleague hands down worse.

Amongst regular supporters? No comparison. AFL and cricket hands down worse.

What did I say that had anything to do with Crowd Behaviour? I wasn't referring to your post, I was stating another topic.

Because you said this...

Also FWIW I think the League would be a lot better if certain MV Groups did not exist and probably at least one that supports City.

That's probably true- but what would you take on the whole?

The active support with these groups or no active support in the first place?

The second... and I dont think you have any real understanding of who these groups are and how the behave - in particular those at MV.

Haha does reading ultras tifo count? I think I have a fair understanding from it, and I'm sure they do a lot of horrific shit I don't know about. What about the Melburnians? Do their subgroups get up to a lot of bad shit compared to the Tards?

Short answer - no.

Long answer - no, not even close.

The A League All Stars should return with a 3-4 game fixture list every July/August to cover and promote the game across the major Australian capitals before AFL / NRL finals start, and the final series is one of the best things (if not the best thing) going for the A League. Convince me otherwise.

Its hard enough to attract attention for final series that actually mean something let alone a series that means nothing with average at best players that are playing in meaningless games.

World class players have been coming out for a while now and even still fail to capture alot of attention.

Convinced?

Clearly you were not there for Melbourne's YNWA Moment...

Actually I was.

And to this day I don't get the big deal. They pumped the song over the P.A and most just sang along. It wasn't like it was a spontaneous outpouring of a favourite song sung by diehards that it meant something to.

I am a massive sucker for these exhibition games and always say that's it I'm not going again but inevitably end up going.

At this point in time still not going to any games this year but will probably go in the end

Somewhat, particularly when teams come here for one off games and the fact the tickets are over priced and poorly scheduled (something that could be said aboutthe most recent finals series).

It just seems like a lost opportunity.  Thinking back to the first time the International Champions Cup was played in Melbourne and the last time Liverpool toured, the market seems there.

Just gotta get the teams right and pricing better.

I was being sarcastic... I was there too, the song was a joke, and the match had less atmosphere than a Moreland Zebras game hence why I left the match twenty minutes to go.

It was also rather ironic to see a large section of the MCG called "The Kop" which seemed to largely consist of PPL not even from Anglo Backgrounds let alone being anything remotely similar to the real Scousers I have meet/know.

They have been trying for over 50 years. Every few years and recently every year it seems someone thinks they can do it better.

These exhibition games are exactly that.

Haha really? Were they even chanting?

Seems any big sporting event or tournament will draw big crowds in Melbourne. The problem seems to me to be that the interest in these events just does not rub off on to the local version of the sport in question. Just as an example, the tennis courts at my local park are busy when the Open is in town and for a week or two thereafter, but deserted for the remainder of the year.

Whether you love or hate the exhibition football matches cum international challenge cups etc. (I hate them) they will draw good crowds but I very much doubt that the local game receives any sustained boost from them.

That said, IMO City Football Group could do a lot more for the growth of Melbourne City by bringing other clubs in the CFG stable to Melbourne and making entry to those matches free for members (or at the very least a very nominal entrance fee). To bring Manchester City here for a competition and then play us on the Gold Coast was an insult to the members here - and I don't care who was responsible for that, it was unforgiveable.
