Hyundai A-League VARs: what you need to know

This weekend, the Hyundai A-League will become the first elite football league in the world to introduce Video Assistant Referees (VARs), with the mantra “minimum interference for maximum benefit.”

After almost a year of trials and training, the technology will go-live for Rounds 26 and 27 of the Hyundai A-League and the 2016/17 Finals Series.

Here’s all you need to know about Video Assistant Referees (VARs).

A-League first to use Video Assistant Referees

HOW WILL IT WORK?

Every Hyundai A-League game will have a VAR assigned.

The VAR will view the game from a video operations room with access to up to 12 camera angles.

If the VAR sees a clear error has been made, he will communicate that to the on-field referee.

The on-field referee will then have the opportunity to ask for the decision to be reviewed by the VAR.

Upon review, the decision will potentially be overturned by the referee.

WHAT CAN THE VAR RULE ON?

The VAR can rule on four different categories of "key match incidents"…

Goals

Did the ball cross the line, was there a foul or an offside missed in the build-up to the goal or did the ball go out of play in the build-up?

Penalty incidents

Was a foul committed inside or outside the penalty area, has a penalty been missed or has one been wrongly awarded?

Direct red cards

Was a potential send-off missed or was a red card wrongly issued?

Mistaken identity

Was a yellow or red card awarded to the wrong player?

DOES THE ON-FIELD REFEREE HAVE TO TAKE THE ADVICE OF THE VAR?

No, but it’s expected in the vast majority of cases, the on-field referee will take guidance from the VAR as they do with the Assistant Referees and change his decision if that is suggested. The VAR has the advantage of seeing multiple replays and angles of incidents.

CAN THE ON-FIELD REFEREE REVIEW THE FOOTAGE?

Yes. In rare circumstances, the on-field referee can run to the sideline and watch a replay.

He or she can potentially change a decision based on that viewing.

WILL THE ON-FIELD REFEREES AND ASSISTANT REFEREES CHANGE THE WAY THEY OFFICIATE MATCHES?

No. Referees have been encouraged to control matches and make decisions in the same way they did before the introduction of VARs.

The VAR mantra is “Minimum interference for maximum benefit.”

The VAR will allow the referee to make his decisions, and only if a decision is clearly wrong will the VAR intervene.

Where there is a clear error, the VAR is the “safety net” to catch that error.

CAN PLAYERS OR COACHES ASK FOR A DECISION TO BE REVIEWED?

No. Players and coaching staff are unable to influence the officials or request reviews and can be sanctioned if they do so.

HOW MANY VARs ARE THERE?

Nine VARs have been trained in the new technology. They include former Hyundai A-League referees.

Seems completely unreasonable,  I don't want sit around and wait for 5 seconds for the right decision to be made :droy::droy:

Looking forward to this game for some reason. Maybe to see Diawara destroy our defence, not sure. But I lay in hope we win 5 - 4 with an ultra attacking display of football from both teams, with some Bruno finishing magic, Rose's relentless runs, Fitzy's mind altering ball control and Kamau's constipation with the ball near the corner flag. Or maybe Timmy's super fly-overs in the box with heading precision that takes your breath away. Brattan' ability to strategically to get the ball and hold up play while pondering on the meaning of life always excites me, or Caceres creating illusions that mesmorises the opposition by floating though a crowded midfield with deft touch passing.

And finally, the Amor post match interview where his linguistic romance with the microphone sends calming and seducing  energy to all those listening.

This is going to be an amazing game, I can feel it.

FWIW I'm completely against video technology being used in football except for decisions in those cases where there is a question of whether the ball crossed the goal line for a goal.

IMO the officials are part of the game, just as the players are. It is subject to human error, like all games. Those errors are a key part of the game, indeed what would be the attraction of a game without that element? We already see how boring the endless possession football of the CFG recipe is - it's already too close to a computer simulation for my liking. No fan talks about how wonderful the possession is, but they'll debate for hours, weeks, months or even years about "we wuz robbed!" It's the human element of football, the raw emotion, that brings the fans back week after week. It really is a love affair.

Watching some European football on TV whilst in HK (e.g Schalke vs. Borussia Dormund) it was so obvious that it is not just the standard of play that is so good, but also the level of the officiating. The challenge to make the A-League a relevant competition in this country is not just to have better players, but also better officials. IMO video technology is a cop-out.

IMO FFA is going down the wrong path, a very dangerous one too.

I'm in favour of it. you only have to look at hockey to see how it can work well. You're right that refs are a part of the game but if a player made those fundamental mistakes in a game he would be dragged off by the coach. It doesn't happen to the ref

Hockey is hardly a world-wide spectator sport, Bela. Doesn't even rate on the spectrum. Perhaps on the sub-continent it evokes some passion and emotional attachment, but I doubt elsewhere it does.

It certainly isn't as popular as football but the rules have been very similar as have the tactics. Its actually quite a popular sport in countries like UK, Netherlands, Germany, Argentina. Several years ago hockey reformed their rules, abolished off side, introduced an interchange bench, a sin bin and video refs. There are international hockey tournaments on Foxtel often enough to catch a few minutes of a game and see how much these changes have improved the game

Malik and Muscat as CBs probably. I'm not stupid enough to fall for the Jakobsen selection ruse again

For once I'd wish this club had a consistent CB partnership.

I'd say the next 2 weeks will consist of...

Malik and Muscat at CB with Jacobsen coming on with 20 minutes to play against Adelaide.

Tongyik with Jacebson to be subbed off around the 60 odd minute mark with either Malik or Muscat to replace

Hard to pick this week...as per usual. There are question marks over most selections. Does Jakobsen start? Sorenson? Rose? Kilkenny? Kamau? Colazo? Cahill? Just about the only certainty in our squad selection every week is Franjic, Brattan and Fornaroli to take their usual spots. Other than that, it is like throwing darts at a dartboard.

                    Bouzanis

Franjic   Malik   Jakobsen   Muscat

             Kilkenny   Brattan

                     Caceres

Fitzgerald                        Colazo

                    Fornaroli

Sorenson, Rose, Retre, Cahill, Arzani, (I have no idea) etc.

I'm of the opinion that we should play Bruno in what is essentially Mooy's 10 role from last year and move Cahill to striker for the rest of the season. If the wingers are slightly more defensive we can allow Bruno to advance somewhat in attack and act as a second striker.

3-1-4-2 for me

                      Sorro

        Franjic.  Jackobsen.  Malik

                       Killa

  fitzy.       Bratt.  Caceras.        Collo

                  Buna. Tim

the big irony of our season is everyone I have seen say we need to have 4 at the back etc etc yet our best performance of the season (FFA cup and first Derby) we have played with 3 at the back

Perhaps Hodgson can provide some input on how to make the Fornaroli/Cahill thing work. The problem I see is that neither of them has the control to play a midfield role, and Cahill is only really useful if he gets decent crosses into the box. FMD our coaches should have worked this out long ago.

There is no way Jakobsen will start. Would be mad to do so after such a lengthy spell out of the game unless he gets subbed off at half time.

IMO he'll come on with 25 minutes remaining and then next week will start and play 60 odd minutes.

I disagree tbh, I'd start him. Although exactly how he is managed would 100% depend upon how fit he is, and only the coaching staff would know that.

Well considering they wrapped him up in cotton wool at our last training session and the fact they have been so precautionary when it comes to bringing him back too early, it would probably suggest that they will do the same when it comes to playing him.

Hopefully you're right and he's he's as fit as fuck, but i'd be worried if he started

Meh, imo the time for caution has passed. Play him for as long as possible the nbext two weeks so he has some sort of form going into finals. I'd rather he got injured again now than go in underdone, or even blow up 10 min into our first final.
