After 5 rounds I think It's enough of a sample size to decide to form a fair opinion on Wazza. Initially I was like who is this bloke etc etc and apart from his reserve team duties at Man Utd it's not really anything special.

But I think he will take us to where we all hope to get. (Top 2 and being competitive in Asia every season ).

I was very worried after the cup game but since then I cannot fault him.

What was also nagging at me in the first 4 games was the little change and the slight playing players out of position  (namely Jakobsen when we have a number of quality midfielders ) but after last night I'm pretty much at ease with Wazza.

This is mainly due to his ability to change it up chasing the goal. Dragging Muscat and for Carusca and putting Fitzy as rb wingback was adventurous.

As he gets more accustomed to the League I'm pretty confident he will improve with the team.

I'm now in the Wazza camp.

I met him the other night at Etihad when he was watching the WSW v Victory

during our short discussion, I made mention of our previous playing style ( sexy football) and defensive frailties and how I was pleased to see he'd given us some backbone and stopped us from throwing away matches, through soft silly goals.

he alluded that he wants to point us back towards soft porn sexy football, not XXX sexy football of the past ( not his words !!!) where we can entertain, but be strong in defence.

in not so many words, feels he has to work with what he has been left with ( cattle wise) not too much say in the overall recruitment.

IMO many of us had come to that conclusion.

Well he wouldn't be able to have a better caliber of player than the group he has now, so he would want to get used it that.

I agree that the caliber of players is the best we have ever had, however the players attributes that Joyce would prefer to be the players strongest might not be so with the current crop.

Given how many of our defensive players came into the season with questions marks over their heads for either past poor performances (Malik, Muscat), concerns over age / injury status (Galekovic, La Rocca, Jakobsen) or being an unknown (Schenkeveld), I get an impression that this crop isn't necessarily the "best" we've ever had; more so a very decent squad coached well.

That's to say I think Joyce could and probably would have gotten more outta other past squads to make them look just as good (if not better)

After all, 2 goals conceded in 5 games and 4 straight wins can make teams look worth more than the sum of all parts.

As others have said tho, still early days

it does seem like he has been just issued a squad and has to deal with it.

i dont really get that.  maybe if there was no cap, but under a cap every player matters. you desperately need to have the players to fit your system.

If it's true, I don't get it either. Legacy players - those already on contracts - I can understand, but certainly not players signed since he's been appointed.

It's called long bench but Wazza's will be busy in January to keep it. Kilkenny for sure.  Another is semi-socceroos Brattan. As being in the City system, I'm not sure what's the freedom of his options. I guess everyone can leave overseas on a good offer. That's hard bit. FFA blocking active contract transfers doesn't help the game.

Interpreted as ...

We have plenty of depth and quality on the bench at present, but if some of our better players, like Kilkenny or Brattan don't get some game time soon, they may want to leave in the January transfer window.  Brattan is interesting though, because he is owned by CFG so his options may be limited.  If a good offer comes from overseas for any of our players, then its hard to stop them leaving.  Although even this can be tricky because of FFA's counterproductive transfer related restrictions.

Nobody will ever win the league with Malik, Kamau in the line up.

The better teams around the world have put good defending midfielders as centre backs to add creativity, we put one of our best CB’s as a midfielder next to a lanky unskillful Malik and wonder why we are boring to watch? We can’t string 4 passes together because football is won in midfield.

Teams winning Leicester style football are an exception, once in 10 years - is that what we want?

Didn't think Joyce did much wrong last night tbh.

His starting 11 was an eleven that has been good all season and proven to be effective, including last time out against these guys. We were atleast on par with them in the first half aside from two LaRocca stuff ups. At halftime he changed everything up, something our previous managers wouldn't have done (I believe Aloisi submits his substitutions before the game) and we dominated the next 20 minutes until yet another stuff up cost us a goal and all momentum. After that there was little he could do, but he still tried to be more attacking and iuse what options he did have left on the bench.

The big test is this week. The players and formation no longer have earnt their spots, so now we see if he looks to have another plan and an ability to execute it.

100% what you've said. Hardly wazza fault that the rock and galekovic wanted to lose this one.

He made changes when he needed to and before Eugenes second brain fart we had the ascendency.
