That Sydney game was the perfect match before the finals with us being made to work hard and I would argue its alot better to have a game in the last round rather than a bye leading into the finals. All the noises from the club is that they have been building and focusing on the finals ever since our place was guaranteed. I am absolutly sure we will be 110% ready

Melbourne City women keep on keeping on as W-League finals test looms

Michael Lynch

January 24, 2016

When you have won the league with several games to spare, notched up a perfect record of 12 wins from 12 matches and generally looked a class above all your rivals then the prospect of a finals campaign might generate a couple of responses.

The first might be fear; after such a wonderful league season, players might suddenly take fright at the thought that all that work could be undone by a momentary lapse of concentration in a one-off knock-out game.

The other might be complacency; having seen off all opposition with little fuss, players might go into a cut-throat finals match without the necessary intensity and focus, running the risk of being caught cold by a pumped up opponent.

Joe Montemurro, the coach of Melbourne City's all-conquering women's team, says his side will be neither.

They will take Brisbane, their semi-final rivals on Monday, seriously, and treat them with respect.

But they are energised, fully-focused and determined to continue their stunning run while playing with the style and verve that has carried them through this remarkable campaign.

On paper this match, a curtain-raiser at AAMI Park to the A-League fixture between City and Wellington, looks a mismatch.

City finished 20 points ahead of Brisbane on the league table, scored 22 more goals and conceded 13 less.

But Montemurro will not take anything for granted until the Champions Cup is safely in the trophy room at the City Football Academy, next to the Premiers Plate.

"We are going to make sure we go ahead and finish the job we have started," he said after a final training session on Sunday morning.

"Our coaching and organisation has had to be spot on to keep them motivated for the past three games [after winning the premiership with three matches to spare] but I have had players coming up saying they can't wait until tomorrow. The energy has been terrific this week."

City will, however, have to make do without key defender Rebekah Stott, who is away on Olympic qualifying duty with the New Zealand national team, so Laura Alleway will come in.

"It's not an ideal scenario. But we have had half the season where players have been on international duty or missing through other scenarios," he said.

Montemurro says the past three weeks, when they have known they would be hosting a semi-final, have simply been about "maintaining the intensity and standards that we are used to. We have kept to our detail. It's the same as it was when we started in September.

"I have created high standards at training and the girls drive it themselves. We are seeing the rewards.

"We can focus on what we want to do and concentrate on what we want to do, but we have to know what they do well. They transition very quickly, they keep players high, which keeps them very wide."
