My understanding:

Marquee: Can be Australian or overseas player. Two allowed per club. Paid by club. Must be approved by FFA. Examples: Fornaroli, De Laet.
Full Season Guest Marquee: Can be Australian or overseas player. Must be approved by FFA. Part paid by FFA or sponsor (such as Fox Sports), and part paid by club as negotiated. Limited by funds available to FFA . Examples: Cahill, Honda. This is a relatively new venture, and so far there have been only two and only one per season.
Guest player: Allowed to play 14 matches. Must be approved by FFA. Limited to one per club. Paid by club. Example: David Villa (four matches).

All the above sit outside the salary cap. However, marquees sit inside the numbers cap and the limit on 5 visa players.

Pretty sure that the Full Season Guest marquee and Guest players sit outside the numbers cap and limit on visa players.

Dont think this is quite right tbh as I'm pretty sure the full season guest marquee has been scrapped. It was only around for one season, which was obv Cahill. This slot was definitely regulated by FFA and essentially you had to hit certain marketability criteria to even get the player approved, let alone enter the negotiations for how much of the salary FFA would contribute.

The FFA and Fox paired up this year to create a marquee fund, which was designed to aid clubs in luring a big name that would attract eyeballs, but actually had no impact on the rules.

Honda is just a regular marquee, however the fund contributed $x to his wage so that MV could afford it as it was mutually beneficial to both MV and FFA to entice him here.

It's true that marquees have to be 'approved' by FFA, however this is only so that teams dont exploit loopholes around the rule ie paying someone under the cap at min wage for 25 weeks then moving them to marquee for two weeks and paying a balloon payment etc. In practice all marquees are approved pretty much automatically as the FFA doesnt dictate who clubs can sign.

HOWEVER, when it comes to the FFA contributing money to a signing, that is purely at their own discretion as they alone determine the marketing value to the league and whether its a worthwhile investment. Hence Honda getting some FFA dosh, whilst Ross the Boss is solely CCM funded. Likewise Usain Bolt's deal rested on the FFA deciding he was worth it for the marketing of the league.

OK, happy to take that correction. But, other than not being an additional marquee, and not being called the same thing, isn't Honda almost the same as Cahill in that he's partially funded by FFA, even if that is actually from Fox?

Yes in terms of the funding, the main difference is that Cahill essentially became a 3rd marquee however because that slot was surplus to the two normal spots. This rule only came about because none of the ten clubs wanted Cahill, mostly because of the money he was asking. City were the only one that were happy to pay the money, but they didnt want to use a 2nd marquee spot on the same position their first marquee already occupied. The only way the FFA could get Cahill into the HAL was to create a new spot in the make up of the squad and cap considerations, which ultimately, only City were able to utilise as noone else was willing to shell out the $$ for a player that was actually going to drag bums and eyes to the game.

In Honda's case he's one of the two regular marquee's that have been in play for five or so seasons now.

Aside from the salary, it was a genuine free hit. We had three marquees and it was a big help in winning us a trophy, though not the one we desperately wanted.

All three marquees had a really good game in the Cup final too.

Those were the days.

I don't think it was a coincidence the FFA were willing to help get Cahill into the A-League at the same time the TV rights were up for negotiation.

Oh yeah Cahill was pretty much forced upon us as we were the only ones ready to stump up the 3mil +

Only just over two years ago, too. In front of the biggest FFA Cup final crowd to date. How things have gone downhill since then.

Well I didnt mind that the red was removed. What was needed was a compromise between the two. Like an Argentina esq kit. Or even a shash home kit

I think you missed JW's point. CFG manipulated FFA into allowing our colour change in exchange for us signing Cahill. Initially FFA approached 3 clubs to sign him (MV, SYD & WSW) all of which knocked FFA back.

No thanks. Don't need another 35 yr old. Why can't we go for a marquee that is say 32?? Much like our neighbors!

I don't know why we have to look beyond players already signed by Manchester City but loaned out to other clubs. Also why isn't the EDS also available to us?

You're right actually, completely missed it!

You think all this talk of this new Western Melbourne team trying to sign a "Del Pieiro/Honda" type marquee could potentially reassess the type of players CFG bring the Melb City?

Say they come into the league have a high profile manager and players play attractive football have their own brand new stadium and start the way WSW started their first couple of years they could easily smash our small attendance levels.

You think it could kick CFG into action with our future signings? Or do you think they are already doing the best they can possible do in this league with the restrictions etc? Or are we just a club fabricated by CFG to offset their money and not cop the financial fair play rule fines and make a little bit of profit if any players show some promise e.g Arzani Mooy n not really give a shit how we perform?

I'll happily take Keanu Baccus. I always thought he was the better of the 2 baccus boys and I've become a fan of what Kearyn brings

We could do worse

*this is assuming that Brattan is leaving us regardless, not sure how his loan agreement works for him to leave

If that is true this club has well and truly lost the fucking plot.

On game day I feel apathetic and Monday to Friday is just anger and frustation. In short this club is fucked.

Firstly, it's not true.

Secondly, saying the club is f****d at every given chance whilst simultaneously using a profile picture of the club lifting a trophy is just... silly. If you can't support when we're not doing we;; (4th in the league by your standard), you don't deserve to bask in the glory when we win.

If you want a vice to aimlessly vent your daily frustrations at, give politics a whirl. Your irrational negativity over a bogus transfer rumour is bordering on a Trump level meltdown.

Great view up here, Champ.

Would be refreshing if people like you put as much effort into bringing your mates to the game as you do talking trash.

Since you know it all already, you'd know that I have posted before about bringing mates to the game and them not enjoying the shit we dish up and not wanting to come back, eg the Syndey game earlier this year.
