Falastur
There's another aspect of the Mix signing that people here probably aren't aware of. MLS is actually even more obtuse with its bizarre rules and restrictions than the A-League, and one of those is that players often get signed to contracts with indefinite ends due to a bewildering array of extension clauses that can often be triggered without necessarily having everyone's agreement, and which often are not publicised anyway. Furthermore, players are technically signed to the league not to individual clubs, and the league simply allocates them to clubs based on details of the transfer. Mix was signed by NYCFC for their first season back in 2015 on very high wages as he was expected to be a centrepiece of the team, but by the end of their second season it was clear that Patrick Vieira didn't rate him and he would have to go. They wanted to sell him but couldn't find any takers, so used a MLS rule which states that clubs can terminate any one player's contract without being hit by salary cap penalties (mutual termination clauses etc) but due to MLS rules his contract wasn't terminated with MLS itself. MLS could have made him available for signing by any other MLS club but it was decided ultimately to loan him to a club in Sweden, probably due to lack of interest. All the NYCFC fans assumed that that was the end of it...until it wasn't. Stories kept popping up that due to MLS rules he was still somehow bound to NYCFC and they would have to put him back in the squad if they couldn't transfer him. Under those circumstances, and with no-one else willing to take him, it suddenly makes a lot more sense that Manchester City agreed to sign him for free. Also he definitely isn't coming to Melbourne, as all the reports state that he will not be sent to another CFG team. To all intents and purposes it seems that CFG have basically done a deal with him where they will let him train in Manchester for a while and find him a new club if he will agree to get off NYCFC's salary books. 2

Also, not many players in that side have set the world on fire this season, the Mariners are crap. Edited January 30, 2018 by Embee

Proven performer at this level by age 20, sure he probably wouldn't cut it in Europe but as @Embee said you don't pick up 50 games by being a spud. On the NYL team though the Cfg have been keeping our young guys well under wraps until they're completely ready to this point and it's paid dividends so far imo with both Atkinson and Arzani being almost complete products by the time they made the team. Too many players come in too early as raw talent in this league. Cfg avoiding that mistake.

bt50
Rose would be a good signing imo, even if just for depth. Would add a backup to Malik and Brattan, and may even eventually overtake them at some point. Prob more a signing that benefits an ACL campaign next season rather than this season tbh.

Murfy1
Melbourne City looked at signing Liam Rose in April 2016 : "All of that must be concerning to Liam Rose, the highly rated 19-year-old who was an almost ever-present for the Mariners this year. Rose has a year left in Gosford, but we hear Melbourne City are very keen on reuniting him with Nick Fitzgerald and Anthony Cacares." (source) On paper it seems funny signing another midfielder. However, I agree that Liam Rose would be good backup if either Malik or Brattan become injured or unable to play. Joyce seems to prefer Budzinski and Mauk in more attacking/advanced positions. Also, then Jakobsen will thankfully be able to continue playing in defence if we have Rose as cover for Malik and Brattan. The one thing to be weary about with this signing is it taking up precious salary cap money, which could perhaps be used to pay Aston Villa for a loan fee for McCormack for the remainder of the season. The latter piece of business should be concluded first IMO. Edited January 30, 2018 by Murfy1

I've always struggled to get my head around how that works. I think it was something to do with the fact that the league set-up may promote equality but it is far more geared towards ensuring that rich club owners only get richer, but I don't recall it being a very strong argument. I'd suggest there's a large portion of America trying to force socialism at the moment (Oh hai Hillary). Re sports yeh i suppose it depends which way you look at it. Socialistic in the regard that the leagues impose salary caps, luxury taxes and rules in order to achieve equality of success, not dissimilar to the AFL, but that 'socialism' is ultimately aimed at maximising profits to the owners in a capitalistic sense, as fans that think they have a better chance of winning are more likely to be engaged and spend money etc.

Murfy1
Davutovic's latest report on Melbourne City's transfer activity (posted January 31st): Quote Hi MCY, Melbourne City has around 24 hours to get a deal done with McCormack, so it's going to be difficult I suspect. Luckily, as I reported 2 days ago, Bruno Fornaroli is edging closer to a return - possibly back in a fortnight. Quote [Discussing if MCFC are going after Liam Rose] Not sure about that one. Chasing it up today Quote Hey mate, they [Melbourne City] are certainly active in this transfer window - they are looking for an attacker. They have a visa spot up their sleeve due to Brandan's exit, but Carrusca had an Aussie passport. McCormack would've filled that visa spot - I wouldn't rule out them signing a visa player after the window closes (would need to be a free agent). https://www.foxsports.com.au/football/a-league/teams/melbourne-city/daniel-arzani-could-be-australian-soccers-next-1-million-man/news-story/56f7fc83b950796ac216e400d27cff58 Edited January 31, 2018 by Murfy1

If the player is to be eligible to play this season he has to obtain a release from his existing club before he can join another. Unless this all happened late last night, a deal with Rose for this season looks dead. All up it looks as though we're not adding to the squad during this window. Unless god forbid he doesn't play. But its a valid point the outs double the ins. Also add that young boy Roberts left for Wanderers and you could say Atkinson is also an out for the season and no injury replacement. So effectively 6 out Cahill, Carrusca, Kilkenny, Brandan Roberts and Atkinson. Ins 2 Vidosic and Delbridge. McCormack straight swap for Bruno. As mentioned earlier by others wiser than I expect some ins shortly. Edited February 1, 2018 by Jovan

John Roberts is listed as an "in" for Wanderers, but isn't listed as an "out" for City - he should be.
