Popular Post Shahanga
This round there will be a minute's applause at every A League to mark the 10th anniversary of the passing of Johnny Warren. SBS, his employers, (although "partners" might be a more apt description) have a whole host of articles about the great man. Here's one: http://theworldgame.sbs.com.au/article/2014/11/06/game-prospers-because-johnny-warren-told-us-so Obviously I am keen to acknowledge Warren's influence on the game, had his mug as my avatar for yonks and still quote him in my sig. Growing up, he was the face of soccer in this country and was always working to promote the game, regardless of obstacles and set backs. Sadly, it almost seemed that he had to die for us to break the 32 year drought between world cups. I was gutted in 1997 when we managed to lose the "unloseable game" to a totally outplayed played Iran, yet I managed to forget my own despair when I saw Warren on the tele- i just felt sympathy for him. So Johnny Warren, this weekend I will knock the top of a frothy and sit down and watch us play live to air on the other side of the country. When i do. I'll salute you. Shahanga
A statue to the great man at the SCG: http://theworldgame.sbs.com.au/video/652942403616/Johnny-Warren-statue-unveiled Football in this country owes Warren a great debt. I'm glad to see his memory is being upheld. (I have to agree with Cahill "its about bloody time")
Shahanga
Really interesting rundown on the '67 tour that Johnny led to the Republic of South Vietnam by the Johnny Warren foundation. Johnny always said that tour was s crucible that forged the team. Edited October 31, 2017 by Shahanga
