I think the fact he's be signed on a four year deal (longer then any other player at the club currently) and hasnt really showed so far that he has deserved it has been the reason for myself anyway why people are so critical of him.

OK, but signing for four years is not his fault is it? (See Winston Bogarde and Chelsea.) I'd ask the same question on Franjic, who we've signed for three. Both these guys are with us until 31/5/2018.

I'm not defending Erik, but IMO the issue is much wider than just him.

I agree the issue is bigger just easier to scrutinise Erik cause he's playing compared to Ivan I guess

To me this guy continues to dissapoint. While a lot of players were to blame for Fridays game I'm most dissapointed in Paartalu. Just watched the replay and realised he was partly at fault for the first two goals we conceded. First goal he pressed forward too far, leaving Nicholls who he was marking and also allowing Vidosic to be by himself in the middle of the pitch.

Second goal for stopping the play when the linesman put his flag up. Being the most experienced player out there in our defence that's just not good enough.

Really hoping a change of manager will get what Ange got out of him in Brisbane.

That photograph says a lot. A single WSW player on the ball, and six of our players well within 10 metres of it - leaving huge gaps everywhere else.

A simple pass to Vidosic and we have six players caught in front of the ball.

Exactly, and with Paartalu moving forward it becomes 7 player (Novillo is up front out of screen to the left). It's not like he couldn't look around and see he's lost his man and see Vidosic is sitting by himself in the middle of the park. And on that point surely as a defensive mid your main priority would be to keep an eye on two of their most effective players in Vidosic and Nicholls.

This photo does say a whole lot.

It says the manager has no idea how to set up a team, no doubt the team will be following a clueless managers orders and its infectious.

People should remember Paartalu was a star at the roar and good please dont just become shit overnight.

Interesting but it has zero context. Was he following the coaches orders? Where is the other dm everyone raves about (I assume that's him even further forward walking back). As for the second goal, everyone stopped. Everyone. Each player is responsible to keep playing. This isn't the responsibility of some 'senior' player to get them moving by then it's to late anyway. How this guy gets a blast every week for the goals we concede but the central pairing get off every week is totally beyond me.

The coach can't hold players by the hand and tell them every move they need to make. In this situation the ball was passed to Vidosic who was by himself because Paartalu failed to even look around him. I won't deny the other players their responsibility, or lack thereof, but while he was on the pitch that night he's the leader of the group.

For the second goal he was the first player to stop play because of the raised flag. Again, he should know better and lead by example. If your asking why I'm saying he's the leader it's because he is one of three players in the squad who the others really look up. One of those is injured and the other ones in the goals. In those moments he did not show those leadership qualities the other players needed.

Why we pressed so far up at the start of the second half, I have no idea. I said in the match thread that Melling for some reason was pressing the centre half and at the same time Mauk was pressing on the left of Bruno. In that pic we see Retre for some reason pressing the midfielder, instead of keeping his position.

The instruction must have come from the manager, which was stupid considering he just made two subs.

To me its ok that we have players pressing forward. But have a look lines between Paartalu and Chapman on the right of the picture and Paartalu and Melling(?) in the centre circle. Theres a huge gap between our last midfielder and first defender. This is where wsw got between our lines with ease.

Secondly the wsw player with the ball is being pressured back to his goal, so why does Paartalu feel he needs to come foreword and get involved. If anything he should instruct Bruno to pressure the ball.

Our defenders are also partly to blame here though because the number one rule with pressing forward high up the pitch is that the team needs to press together. If you don't then you risk leaving to big a gap between your lines. So our defence once Paartalu pressed forward should have also moved forward.

In the end given this situation I strongly believe he should have been better aware of wsw best player in Vidosic and Nicholls and to me he has lost himself  ball watching in this moment and left the centre of the park exposed.

I don't know why Retre is that high up to be honest!

I agree pressing high is okay if you do it as a unit. In this situation we clearly didn't, which created the gaps you are talking about. For me it should have been Bruno or Gameiro pressing the centre half and not Melling which just creates space for their midfielder. When that pic is taken we have 5 players the wrong side of the ball. One more pass and two more are taken out, which leaves a 4 on 3 for them.

IMO Paartalu's been in solid form over the past 3 games:

- The 1-1 away draw against Brisbane, 58 passes at 87.9% accuracy and 4 interceptions and 2 tackles

- The 5-1 home win against Perth, 64 passes at 90.6% accuracy and 5 interceptions and 1 tackle

- Yesterday's 5-1 away win against CCM, 46 passes at 76.1% accuracy, 1 assist and 3 interceptions and 1 tackle

But overall I agree, apart from a good spell of games at the start of last season Paartalu hasn't reached any great heights at Melbourne City for whatever the reason (he blamed lack of fitness for last season). Good to see him starting to consistently play well, and hopefully he can now be a good season long performer for us.

On balance I would rather have kept him until the end of the season as his form has improved of late. But not overly concerned either. His passing in many games has been abominable, especially early in the season and anything over about 15 metres always goes to the opposition. Malik can do what he did (including being a threat at set pieces) and Melling (quicker, harder, shit passer) and Retre (better passer, bit slower) can fight for the other spot.

Erik was always one of my favourite players.

I think we'll see how effective he really was from now on. Melling is a shadow of his former self and Retre is well off the pace after being left out of the midfield for so long. We can't have these two trying to shield the shittest defence in the league.

Our only hope is Malik, who I am undecided on.
