Popular Post Fingman
With the task of selecting a new name, the core for the brand new Melbourne City FC terrace asked the wider club fan base to submit their suggestions for consideration for the final name to eventually be decided by a vote by the whole Melbourne City FC community. Having met as a supporter group once, the direction and style of the new terrace had largely been decided and the majority of structural suggestions were backed without contention. From this meeting a major theme ran throughout all discussions, this theme was one of inclusion, togetherness and unity as supporters of the club. On this basis, amongst the many suggestions received, none had more support than the name that has been chosen and seconded unanimously by both the core and the outer-core groups. It is our pleasure to present to you the future of Melbourne City FC, a group for all supporters, a name by which we can all be proudly recognised. MELBURNIANS As a leadership group we believe that this name encompasses all that we stand for, it is a name of inclusion and without division. Along with this name, we plan to utilise the year 1847. Our club badge includes the Melbourne city coat of arms, our away kit includes Melbourne’s official colours of red and white, and we will continue to support the city’s history by proudly promoting the year that Melbourne officially became a city. The numbers ‘1847’ will feature heavily in our logo, many banners and many nicknames for our beloved terrace. Common nicknames have already popped up, which some people may prefer to use when referring to the terrace, names such as ‘M47’, ‘The Four-Sevens’ etc. The great thing about this name is it is such a wide umbrella, every supporter regardless of where they sit at AAMI can feel included as part of the group. It goes without saying that some people may find the name to be a bit plain or boring, it will definitely grow on you, and the benefit is that if you attend games regularly with friends, there is nothing to stop you from having your own sub-group under the wider banner of Melburnians. Our colour scheme will largely remain red and white, but as you can see by our logo we will not shy away from incorporating hints of sky blue. We are supporting Melbourne City FC and will therefore support ALL the colours of our club. This continues to align with our core value of remaining inclusive and welcoming to all supporters of the club. We will be very purposely keeping the nickname ‘Heart’ for the club and of course for ourselves as supporters. You will see this utilised in chants and visual displays on a regular basis. Along with the name we can also introduce you to the core leadership for this inaugural season as a terrace. King Malta (Matty) Jimmy (James) BeardedHeart (Tony) Fingman (Jarrod/Fingers) This leadership group does have the potential to be expanded in the coming weeks as we find our feet in this challenging role. One thing we really want to do a great job at is communication with the wider supporter base and the inclusion of every Melbourne City FC fan. We will definitely be keeping everyone up to date with our progression over the next few weeks. Info on meetings, our first game against Sydney FC in the FFA Cup and how you can get involved will be coming soon. Please follow and like us on all of your social media platforms! Cheers, Melburnians Core
Deluka
I was under the impression that the suggestions would be narrowed down to a few and then a vote would occur. That's why I didn't post any suggestion to the email, or did I miss the vote? *I wouldn't have voted for Melburnians and I'm not having a crack, just curious is all. Fingman
I was under the impression that the suggestions would be narrowed down to a few and then a vote would occur. That's why I didn't post any suggestion to the email, or did I miss the vote? *I wouldn't have voted for Melburnians and I'm not having a crack, just curious is all. To clear this up, if the original post didn't explain it clearly enough. The suggestions received to the email overwhelmingly suggested Melburnians as a sole suggestion or at the top of many lists. The majority of people posting suggestions on the forum were in favour of Melburnians or not opposed to it, it struck us as the best name to suit the whole supporter group rather than just some of the more niche sections, it was also the least boring of all of the neutral options. Hopefully that clears it up. Long story short, with the overwhelming support for Melburnians, wasting time on a vote seemed silly in the end, and the name was voted unanimously amongst the 15 or so who currently exist in the core or outer-core too. They originally said that they would take suggestions then decide whether core would choose the name or put it to a terrace vote. They never promised that it would go to a vote.

We found that Melburnians was easily the most popular suggestion from the general consensus on the forum and more specifically the emails, so much so that we felt a vote would of been superfluous. Also everyone in the leadership group were happy to role with the name. We have very little time before the FFA Cup to get scarfs and banners made and a vote would of wasted time we don't have.

Gents let's show support, some may not like the name but at the end of the day it was a majority preference, we are never going to satisfy all but what we can do is support those who are willing to put their time and effort into it
Nate
Great work guys, exciting times ahead for all of us! We don't all have to agree with the name (I personally like it) but it's important we all get behind it, support the new core leadership group through new and potentially challenging times and establish the new terrace in time for our first competitive game. I've got a really good feeling about all of this, absolutely buzzing for the start of the season already.

[LIBBA]
I would of loved to have seen a poll or something on here similar. Not saying that you blokes just picked it yourselves just cause u liked it, but would of been a hell of a better way to see what people wanted. You would of received me responses as well.

schwarzgelb
When there is a year on the logo it states when the club was created. Change to 2014 to signify creation of the new group. No one fucking knows when Melbourne was founded.
Harry_Underage
I am a fan of the name, very inclusive and the use of the year 1847 is a touch of class. However the badge looks like something you would see on a lolly wrapper of on the back of an ice cream van.

I'm sorry if this comes across as me having a go, but could we have picked a stronger and less cheesier name them that. I don't see how it's cheesy... It's the demonym for people of Melbourne. Really? Its not cheesy??? To start off with, it reminds me way too much of "The Cityzens" or how ever they spell it. Secondly aren't the visitors technicall5 "Melburnians" also. Come on guys. Even the emblem. If your gonna have a heart in the emblem, why not the orginal emblem and not an actual heart. Again this is not having a go at the 4 blokes who got this train going forward, but when I think of a terrace, the name usually needs to be a strong one. Melburnians is just not a name I would put in that category. Again just my opinion.

LR9
Yarraside had the same issues in the early days. When we finally decided, it was received with mixed opinions, even though it was the majority option. It will grow on you, not only through exposure/brand recognition, but through the memories and emotional attachment that you will have in the future, be it in or around the terrace.Well done lads, great choice. You've got my support.
