Melbourne City FC will kick off its pre-season campaign with a friendly match against National Premier Leagues Victoria (NPLV) side Ballarat Red Devils next Wednesday 25 June from 7pm.

John van’t Schip’s side will travel west to Ballarat for the clash, which will be held at the Red Devils’ home at Morshead Park. The facility is set to host the Bahrain national team during the 2015 AFC Asian Cup, which commences in January.

Melbourne City commenced pre-season training on Monday 9 June and this will be the first open hit-out for van’t Schip’s new-look squad, with the Club set to take a full-strength squad for the match.

With newcomers James Brown, Connor Chapman, Jacob Melling and Aaron Mooy joining the Club last week, the match against the Red Devils could present the quartet with their debuts.

New signing Damien Duff, who was announced last week, will not take part in the match and will join his teammates in July.

“We have had a positive start to pre-season and this match will give us an indication of where we are at after the first couple of weeks,” van’t Schip said.

“We are building an exciting squad, but it’s important for the players to first build match fitness, and for us to integrate our new squad members into the style of football we want to play.”

Ballarat Chairman Duncan Smith said the passionate Ballarat football community were excited about the prospect of Melbourne City visiting the region.

“This is what we wanted when we first talked about building a football stadium in Ballarat; the opportunity to bring matches like this to the region,” Smith said.

“We hope this will be the first of many clubs and teams that come to Ballarat to train and play on what I believe is the best stadium in regional Victoria.

“We are now starting to build up the awareness that Ballarat is a very good option for teams to come to, now that we have a fantastic stadium and a Red Devils team in the NPL.”

I'm thinking of setting up a camera to record some video of the match so that those unable to make it can view a 'highlight' real of some sorts.

now i'm no expert but you'll probably be surrounded by FFA/FFV hired goons and told to cease and desist, :)

Yeah, I was thinking that, I think that happened to someone last preseason. There's no harm in trying though!

Melbourne City members free but Ballarat members have to pay. But yeah let's pretend to support local clubs and communities..

I'd imagine melb city are paying the difference for their members entrance.

If the local club wants their members to pay it's not really up to melb city to dictate otherwise

Is there a possibility that Ballarat will feature a regional game soon?

Ballarat would be a smart choice to be fair, a lot of people on here have been open to the idea and it's pretty accessible from Melbourne.

It doesn't seem like we have a home regional game this season however judging by our fixture.

Do you mean an A-League game? Surely doing so would be unwise, based on how badly the Visitors have upset their fans by moving home games out of the city?

Just a question for you guys - does Ballarat actually have a stadium up to hosting A-League games? Something capable of hosting 15-20k or more (I know that Heart's attendances aren't usually that high but 10k stadiums are usually a completely different kettle of fish from 20k ones).

They had one in Albury last season (which is about 200km further away from melbourne). Which given the weather (which was 43 degrees c) was pretty successful, I think the crowd was 7k.

There wont be a regional game this season as it would be on the draw as TBA

Melbourne City FC plays its first pre-season match on Wednesday night against National Premier Leagues Victoria (NPLV) side Ballarat Red Devils.

After three weeks of pre-season training, Head Coach John van't Schip hopes tonight's match will give him an indication of where his team is at both physically and technically.

“It’s going to be the first real hit-out for the boys,” van't Schip told the Ballarat Courier today.

“What we’re looking for is conditional. We want to see how well the players are gelling with each other and how well they are performing in different positions.

“We’ll switch around a little bit and it’s a good time to have a look at the youth team that we’ll be using in the coming months.

“We expect that we’re going to play against an opponent that’s very fit, and we’ll probably have one team playing each half.”

James Brown, Connor Chapman, Aaron Mooy and Jacob Melling could make their first appearances for Melbourne City on Wednesday evening.

Ballarat player-coach James Robinson is expected to field a full-strength side for the home club.

Its going to be annoying for PPL when we have to line up and have names crossed off the Membership list.

Our "regional" game this season looks to be Round 18 (14th February 2015) vs. Wellington away. IIRC last time around this was held in Dunedin.
