Wellington Phoenix will have at least four debutants in their starting line-up against Melbourne Heart on Saturday.

The scheduling of Hyundai A-League games during World Cup qualifying rounds means seven players who were in the squad for the Phoenix's 2-0 win over Sydney will be missing for the Round 2 trip across the Tasman.

New Zealand play Tahiti in Papeete on Saturday and again in Christchurch on Tuesday, while Benjamin Totori will be in action for the Solomon Islands as well.

It is a frustrating situation for the club which made submissions to Football Federation Australia to have the match rescheduled but were turned down.

"The biggest thing is that it's disappointing that the A-League won't give us time off," said defender Ben Sigmund, one of six All Whites who will miss the Heart match.

"It just seems pathetic. It's just annoying for everyone."

With goalkeepers Mark Paston and Glen Moss, defenders Leo Bertos, Sigmund and Tony Lochhead, plus striker Jeremy Brockie all on All Whites duty it has left the defensive ranks particularly thin.

Academy players, goalkeeper Scott Basalaj and left-back Luke Rowe, are expected to start at AAMI Park as are uncapped squad members Michael Boxall and Cameron Lindsay at centre-back and right-back, respectively.

With five injured players – Vince Lia, Lucas Pantelis, Jimmy Downey, Dani Sanchez and Mirjan Pavlovic – also unavailable, cover will be required on the bench too so academy duo Hamish Watson and Tom Biss could be handed one-match contracts as well.

"It's not only the seven who are going to be away but we've got four that aren't back training properly yet so that's a huge impact," said Herbert, who will hand the reins to assistants Chris Greenacre and Jonathan Gould for the match.

"We'll have to bring in some young players and integrate them into the team.

"But we'll be there. We'll front up. We've got three points to go and get against Melbourne Heart."

Whats the latest on Fred? Hammy ok?

According to Fred's twitter, he seems to think it's fine. People who have asked him how's his hammy, he has responded with "all good mate". Should be out there this Sunday, great news.

We'll have to play posession football this week, and it'll be a test of Aloisi's system going forward. How do we break down a 8-10 man defence? Our weapons of speed on the wings won't be as useful as it was on the counter attack. It'll probably be Garcia and Fred trying to create passes similarly to Flores and Finkler last week.

Very worried about this game. Usually sides play above themselves when they have quite a few players out. Hopefully JA has drilled it into the boys not to take this game lightly this week. Wellington are a team who love getting fluke results away from home.

Starting XI will be the same I think with possibly Germano coming in for Hoffman on the bench, that is the only change I see happening.

I think this will end in a draw 1-1.

2-0 Melbourne FC.

D-Mac - 11'

Muscat OG - 72'

Crowd; 5,783.

Anyone know who they plan on picking as their goalkeeper considering there two squad keepers are gone?

just think if its a young lad coming in for his first aleague game we should pepper the goals from any position on the field in the first half hour, just while those first game nerves are there, don't want him to have nothing to do for the first half and his confidence is up.

Fred declared a certain starter for Melbourne Heart's clash with Wellington Phoenix

MELBOURNE Heart will not rest captain Fred in a bid to have him fit for the business end of the season.

Heart allayed fears on Wednesday the 33-year-old's early season form would be undermined by injury, declaring Fred a certain starter for Sunday's clash with Wellington Phoenix at AAMI Park.

The midfielder - who missed 10 games last season with hamstring and groin injuries - grabbed at his leg after stretching for a loose ball late in last Friday's win over Melbourne Victory.

He was soon substituted, but Heart football operations manager John Didulica said on Wednesday the problem was cramp.

Didulica said early-season cramp was common, but is unsurprising given Fred had off-season groin surgery.

"He just got a bit of cramp high up in his hamstring, which is unusual. Most people when they grab their hamstring like he does tend to have ripped something, but he just got a little bit of cramp," Didulica said.

"He ran himself into the ground, but he'll be fine for this weekend.

"He played two or three 90-minute games during the pre-season, so he was at a certain level of conditioning, but you never can account for what real match conditions will be like."

Heart has spoken of the need to monitor Fred throughout the season, but Didulica said that would not extend to him sitting out games.

"We don't need to manage him to that degree, it's more managing his weekly training loads to make sure he's available for each week," he said.

"He can train 99 per cent of what the other players can. It's just at different times he might need to recover a little bit differently than what a 22-year-old does. He's 33 now, but there's no doubt how important he is to us."
