I will lock this thread after this post. Thank you all for your kind thoughts and words at this difficult time. It means a lot to me. On Sunday afternoon my son and I are hosting a small afternoon tea at home for close friends of my wife - this was her wish instead of a funeral - and so I will not be at the match. I know that we are supposed to remain anonymous on here, but I should be at all the remaining home matches this season, so if anyone would like to come around to Section 19 behind the southern goal to say hello, I'm at the end of row DD next to Section 20. I will close by saying that I received every sympathy from the club when I wrote to the membership team concerning my wife, and I don't think we know, and therefore we can't appreciate, how hard Ryan and his team are working to bring the club closer to its fans, and perhaps we can remember that into the future. Reckon I teared up a little bit watching the highlights package this morning. I was at the damn thing and watched the replay yesterday but it only really hit me this morning just watching the scenes after the final whistle. I’m a grown ass man tearing up at a highlights package. But who the fuck cares…I’ve been watching this club battle and battle and battle since 2010. I’ve watched us put out honest triers for years, knowing we’d never get trophies, all the while watching Victory and then Sydney dominate. It was beyond frustrating. Then CFG changed everything, some things for the worse but most things for the better. For a moment there it all seemed too much. Well now we’ve won a title, with a whole bunch of academy products (including a kid who is a lifelong fan) and it feels fucking glorious. It’s only a game. A stupid game in a league derided as a bit of a joke. But it’s also one of the best moments of my life. And I’m happy for the club, thrilled for everyone who did it, but I’m even happier for us guys (and ladies) who live and breathe the club, show up midweek at dead rubber matches, and post on a tiny forum with an active community of 50 posters. I hope it brought and brings you all as much happiness as it has for me.

For all the shit we give CFG and what seemed to be the complete disregard for our history. This is the single greatest thing they have done for the real fans of this club, the ones who have been here for 10 years

I've slept on my thoughts. In no particular order: We looked good for 22 minutes, although a little fragile in defence, allowing the vist0rs a few chances that a decent team would have converted. O'Neill's a key player for us; it was good to see him finally score. Why do we go through the inconvenience of regular bag searches, and body 'scans', and have to watch security jump on and wrestle a 14 yr old for standing on a seat when 'security services' provide no security whatsoever when they are needed? It looks like Glover threw two flares off the pitch; the first was just over the advertising fence, the second into the first few rows of a seething mob. Whilst this may have triggered the pitch invasion, it was widely advertised before the game, was premeditated, and was NEVER going to help the cause; APL has much evidence to show why a Grand Final should not be held in Melbourne. Both sets of active support seem to attract 'derby specials' who are never there primarily for the game itself; active support groups must actively identify and exclude these people. Flares are not the issue themselves; there were flares at Fed Square; they added to the atmosphere and were barely reported on by the media, and attracted no Police attention, but throwing anything on the pitch is unacceptable APL muzzling franchise media response immediately after the match left an unhealthy media vacuum APL has handled this issue very poorly; if they had thought this through, would they have expected any different fan response and, in particular, a different response from an entitled aggressive ill-disciplined group like visit0rs active support? I feel for the majority of supporters there who had their evening ruined, hundreds of frightened kids, potential lost future supporters, the players and Alex King. I hope the Channel 10 camera man is OK. A day of shame.

Can't fault the club, if Valon gets over the line it's a terrific transfer window. The midfield was clearly the most deficient area of our squad and we've rectified it with three hard-nosed Europeans, all at a really good age and with experience. How we go throughout the season really falls on PK now.

Still pinching myself we won this. 10+ years of supporting this club, and to reach the heights we have this season, what an amazing turnaround! I wouldn't of wanted to celebrate it with a better bunch of people, everyone on this forum deserves this!let the good times roll!!!!!

I’ve been sitting on this for a while, but I need to get this off my chest, as my positive attitude is starting to wear thin. Who knows what will happen...Kisnorbo might turn this around and start getting results. It’s amazing what can happen when a team gets into the groove and achieves consistency. Once Reis and Griffiths and Nabbout come back in and Maclaren starts finding the back of the net, we could be looking at a completely different side. The alternative is that we fall to pieces, lose confidence in our ability, our system and the manager and we bottom out. That might’ve started. As much as I fancy our squad to be near the top, the frustrating thing here is that CFG seem to be reluctant to pull the trigger and be ruthless when they need to be. If the next month doesn’t bring results then he should be sacked and CFG need to go after the best available as caretaker. They also need to properly invest in a foreign contingent of players that can put us comfortably in the top two, regardless of the manager. We have resources and a scouting system that is quite literally the envy of the league and we still can’t nail our signings. They’re solid signings to be sure, but they should be better, there’s no denying that. I also can’t quite work out why CFG haven’t installed a better football boss than Petrillo, and why they couldn’t get a better tactical manager than Kisnorbo, particularly when Mombaerts showed what a terrific manager can achieve. They went the easy option and they know it. It’s perplexing. The youth side of things is even more strange. We had Alou Kuol playing out of Goulburn Valley and apparently we didn’t show any real interest. Nick Montgomery took a punt and look what’s happened. We’ve seen some of our youth leave and rack up minutes for our opponents (including my favourite in Najjarine). Meanwhile we bring in Gomulka and relegate him to the bench after two starts and Tilio after one. I know there are pragmatic answers to all these questions. I’ve looked at posts similar to this one and answered them in my head. ‘Genreau didn’t show enough and Metcalfe was better’, ‘Dukuly who?’, ‘Najjarine doesn’t really fit our system.’ But fucking hell, I’m kind of sick of rationalising these odd decisions, which in the aggregate are starting to just look like plain old bad management. This football club just baffles me, or maybe I’m baffled by my insistence on following a team that just won’t ever win shit and won’t get its shit together. I get that’s football, but I just thought that CFG would build a Frankenstein squad and win us some trophies and I could laugh at the whining by opposition supporters.

As we approach our first friendly of the pre-season and competitive match of the FFA Cup, I wanted to bring a bit of tactical discussion and analysis to the forum for those that are interested. With the news that Erick Mombaerts had been appointed as our Head Coach for three seasons, we finally have a football brain in charge of Melbourne City; someone that has a clear conception of how the game should be played. In his first interview, he spoke about his goal of developing our style of play into the City style of play. But what actually is that and how will it work at Melbourne? I'll discuss it below, but I want to stress that we don't know the extent to which Mombaerts will implement the City style of play, and we don't know if there are strict frameworks that coaches must adhere to. It's entirely possible that the City style is philosophically based, but I do think that Mombaerts will be striving to emulate Manchester City's style. Manchester City The City style of play is presumably the style that Manchester City have been using to win countless Premier League titles. I say presumably because the template is not driven by CFG in a top-down manner, it's mainly driven by Manchester City and then adopted by CFG to be pushed to its other clubs like Melbourne and New York. It's no secret that Pep Guardiola has been able to spend staggering sums of money to build a formidable squad of players. But that's only part of it. Pep has Manchester City playing a very quick, attacking style of football, characterised by high possession counts, high shots on target, complex movement/interplay in the middle/attacking thirds and an extremely effective and complex counter-press. I don't want to go too heavily into these aspects because many of us watch the PL and know how exciting and attacking City are. Plus, it can become too technical and there are parts I don't understand very well. City always play out from the back, using diagonal balls both short and long and finding pockets of space really well. They also 'rest' in certain positions depending on where the ball is, instead of passively watching the play unfold, so that if they lose it they can execute their counter-press, which is where a team will 'press' the ball as a system as soon as they lose possession. It begins with the forward three players, who are very important in initiating the press and continues on with the midfield. If executed properly, the counter-press will force a turnover just after the team lost it, ideally in an even more dangerous position than where they lost it initially. Formation-wise, Pep has almost always used a 4-3-3 with two advanced central midfielders and a single pivot (usually Fernandinho). Sometimes he will change this depending on his opponents but the 4-3-3 is by far the most common and is favoured by most top teams. In terms of personnel, the average City player is technically flawless and spatially very aware. Some City players are very athletic depending on their role but all are comfortable on the ball (even Ederson their GK is very good with his feet) in tight spaces, adept at passing and proficient at shooting. Last season, City were able to rotate players in and out of the starting XI with no discernible drop-off in quality. Any player that comes into the XI is able to fit seamlessly into the system. Melbourne City Now that I've summarised the City style of play, I want to apply it to our team and draw some similarities in terms of personnel. The biggest question that remains unanswered is what formation Mombaerts will use. Leaving aside the potential for him to change it during the season, it seems to me that he is likely to go with a 4-3-3. I'm basing this on his insistence that we will be playing the 'City way', but I'm conscious of the fact that Mombaerts strongly favoured a 4-2-3-1 in his time with YFM and that the 'style of play' can be replicated with a 4-2-3-1. The biggest difference are the two attacking midfielders and designated 10 versus the two wingers and two attacking 8s. It's really a difference in degree rather than kind, so it doesn't need to be analysed in depth here. Suffice it to say that a 4-2-3-1 favours players who are very comfortable on the ball in tight and that can pass between them very quickly and accurately, rather than a 4-3-3 which favours quicker wingers who operate a bit wider and cut in. Our Starting XI And this naturally brings me to our personnel, which suits a 4-3-3 quite well. I'll break it down by player, who I've chosen as the most likely to feature in a theoretical Mombaerts side (obviously this is IMO, it is likely to change in pre-season as they condition the players and form becomes a bit clearer): Bouzanis: Even though Birighitti is a better keeper technically, Bouzanis is good with the ball at his feet and his distribution will allow for us to keep possession of the ball when we need to recycle it. He can also hit long diagonal passes very well for an A-League keeper. For this reason I think Bouzanis will be given the first match, provided he makes the saves he needs to and positions himself well. Galloway/Jamieson: The two Scotts will probably play on the right and left and will need to very mobile. Manchester use their two fullbacks differently, but both will at times tuck in and play centrally as an extra midfielder, and the other will push very high. It tends to be Walker who pushes up and Delph who tucks in. How it will work with Jamieson and Galloway I'm not sure. I think Galloway will be the more expansive fullback. Windbichler/Delbridge: Windbichler is exactly the kind of defender that we need for a possession-based style. He is very good on the ball and has experience as a midfielder. Delbridge will partner well with Windbichler, particularly because Delbridge is a dual-sided defender who can play the ball out. From what I've seen, Windbichler is a very solid defender, and we know that Delbridge is a commanding presence. Brillante: Brillante is made for this formation. A well-rounded player with good athleticism and a decent engine, he will find himself in between the defensive line and the two more advanced midfielders. Essentially, his role will be to 1) facilitate the movement of the ball from the back and be the link between defence and the midfield and 2) cover the other two midfielders and break up attacking movements. He will have a lot of possession in every match, but his role is not to create. His effectiveness will come from his retention of possession and marshalling/positioning of teammates in front of him. Fernandinho is his Manchester counterpart and Josh will model his game on him. Berenguer/Luna: This is the most interesting part of the XI. I know that many City fans are wary of Berenguer and I am too. Joyce used him as a wide player in the 4-3-3, which didn't suit him at all. Berenguer does not shoot much, he does not score, he does not like to dribble past players and cut in. What he does do is find pockets of space, particularly in the half-space when it's free, and his two best assets are his touch and his vision, which is why he needs to be played centrally behind the striker. Naturally he likes to drift to where the ball is but I suspect Mombaerts will have him a bit more central and narrow, to allow the winger on his side enough space. I chose Luna as the other midfielder but this is a tricky one. Luna is comfortable out wide but from what I've seen of him he is actually quite a threat when played centrally. He is very neat on the ball, can dribble well and his passing and creativity are massive ticks in the midfielder box. Bernardo Silva is his closest Manchester counterpart. Noone/Cabrera: Noone is an obvious pick for the wide role, as is Cabrera. Both are quick, natural wingers who like to cut in and shoot. These two will be a big part of our success because they will provide the width for the attacking midfielders and Maclaren. With Berenguer, Brillante and Luna as the playmakers, the wingers should be on the end of quite a few long diagonal passes, if we follow Manchester's style. This is where pace and vision/passing skill complement each other, and I think we've got two wide players who suit that method of chance creation. Maclaren: The obvious and only real pick for the striking position. Manchester's striking options are world-class finishers of the ball. Maclaren is relatively speaking a very good finisher of the ball at this level, and this will be a big part of our success should we achieve it. Maclaren will need to be selfless if the system is to work, because the City system requires players to vacate space for others. Interplay is vital here, which is where Maclaren will have to improve. Conclusion If you're still with me, basically what I've hoped to say here is that we should be optimistic about this season. Being a Melbourne City fan hasn't been easy, and there have a been a few false dawns. But this time feels a bit different when you look objectively at the squad and how it's structured. Mombaerts will obviously be the biggest influence here, and we've already heard from Denis Genreau that the players have had quite a few video/tactical sessions before going out onto the pitch every day. Mombaerts is a tactician, so the most important part of his coaching is his ability to get across the tactical points of the system. Manchester under Pep are a very well-drilled, organised, disciplined unit. The level of skill between Manchester and Melbourne is obviously very different but the ability to cohere to a system is universal. If Mombaerts follows the City style of play developed by Pep Guardiola faithfully, we can look forward to a productive, successful season.

In amongst all the doom and gloom...I'd like to wish everyone a Merry Christmas and Happy New Year. It seems as though club-supporter relations are at an all-time low, and whatever happens in the short-term, I sincerely hope that we can get ourselves out of the mess we're in as quickly as possible, and get back to enjoying football and all the good things it can bring. I regard the Forum as a valuable resource, and again, I hope we can find some optimism soon. All the very best to everyone.

CFG will purchase a number of low cost Hawks. We will use them to deter the Seagulls, once they have become effective they will be moved onto Manchester the be sold around Europe to the highest bidder. We will then start again and continue develop birds for CFG to sell for a profit.

Many here have dealt with the lowest of lows through our history and the ridicule of other supporters. From bottom of the table finishes, sub par training conditions, multiple training locations, wheelie bin ice baths, taking the scraps of other clubs players especially the tards... just to name a few things..... ...but now, we are premiers 3 years running with the tards stuck to the bottom, and they pick up our scraps of players we don't want, our players are being picked up for the Socceroos, our facilities are best. So I'd like to be gracious in victory but te be completely honest i say fuck you to all the haters and underminers out there. "We will be, and are, the greatest team, this city has seen"!!!!

Precisely. The cultural change we needed, and still need, is in the brains, or lack of them, of our owners. Just as we, the fans, are half-hearted in our support for the club - and that's on a good day - so are many of the other people connected to the club, including the players. On the field we stand for nothing except being the antipodean branch office of Abu Dhabi. Joyce himself is just a wrecking ball. He has presided over the departures of a long list of senior players, and introduced a mind-numbingly boring style of play that has almost no attacking intent whatsoever. He may like to blow his own trumpet about McGree, Wales and Atkinson being a part of the recent U-23 squad, but he had fuck all to do with the development of either McGree or Wales, and has to have his arm twisted before giving genuine City youngsters such as Pierias and Metcalfe a few minutes - just as he had to have his arm twisted to start Arzani last season. He's a total fraud.

One point I would like to add. Rado has done what very few football coaches and managers would do - step forward and say that he doesn't feel up to the job. I think that shows what a gentleman he is, and we should respect him for that.

Its a great gesture from the club and one that will hopefully unite some of the fans that dropped off because they thought the Heart era was disrespected, whether thats true or not. My personal feel was the club made some dumb mistakes in the first year but ever since, and especially in the last 2 or so years have been very respectful of our history and have made active efforts to engage the past. Obviously some people were hurt by the colour change and will never accept any peace pipe offerings, but those types have made their choice and hopefully will move on if they havent already (some definitely haven't). But there's plenty that are just in that in between phase and if this is the start of something bigger and better then we as a club, and as a wider fan base are all the richer for it. I hope it doesnt become a 'we should go back to the red and white at home' thing though, because that would be getting a little bit of rope and running a mile with it. I'd hate to see the club reluctant to do things like this going forward because every time the same types dig up all the old skeletons and make it more trouble than its worth. Nevertheless, here's to making history and seeing Curtis Good lift up that big fucking toilet seat in our foundation kit.

We were lucky against roar? If we were lucky, then I'll counter by saying roar were even luckier X 50 that they even got within 3 goals of us. So there it is, Sydney FC confirmed for the Grand Final. The A-League corporate-bots in NSW will be unashamedly barracking against us tomorrow so that they can have their dream all-Sydney final and avoid having to deal with the headaches of negotiating the home venue should we dare win. I hope we fucking annihilate Macarthur tomorrow. I don't value the finals series as highly as the Plate but this season, I care based on the principle. I hope we win not only because we deserve to, but because I don't want anyone else to have the satisfaction. Between losing our 3 best players this season to the Socceroos, our injuries and the debacle of playing an earned home semi-final in Sydney, I hope we rise above the adversity and send a message to Sydney FC. Fuck 'em all. Go City.

Jack Clisby, Ruon Tongyik, Mark Birighitti and Oliver Bozanic all played a hard fought 0-1 loss to this years Champions on the weekend. Good effort.

I felt that Saturday’s result was a cathartic moment in the history of the A-League and for Melbourne City (and indeed for the late Melbourne Heart). We have been laughed at as having no identity except that of “not being Victory” and the butt of endless jokes about having no heart and being the moneybags club that never wins anything. But Saturday night washed all that away. We and the League came of age in a match that will never be forgotten. What a privilege it has been to have been there from the start.

Yeah it was a shit game, but fuck me this is an overreaction and a half. Yeah Covid restrictions are a pain, but I’d much rather go to live football with restrictions than not go at all. I also think quite a few people remember the Heart days through very VERY rose tinted glasses. Look I'm no Joyce fan but fuck me if this isn't the most pessimistic forum. We have won 3 on the trot. I actually thought we were the better side for much closer to 70 minutes. The last 20 mins we looked deadset average. If Wales was a little more composed we would have won that at least 3 - 0. For all the ribbing he is getting I thought wales had a good game outside of his finishing. He is certainly getting into good spots. Our combinations to get forward seemed much slicker than previously. I think the players (and coach) actually deserve some credit for making roar look average for most of the match. I find the Fornaroli thing strange, I saw him walking into the stadium he gave me a smile. I agree with BT on this we don't have all the facts and should let this play out as annoying as it is. End of the day we got the result and are equal second. The doom and gloom on this forum is actually killing me to the point I check it less than I used too.

Sorry its meant to be a generalisation of AFL clubs ability to communicate compared to City's. Since consistently in the AFL every club is pretty good at all those things, I am putting it down as an AFL thing. City seem to be a worse version of the rest of the A-League clubs in this regard. To your second point, I agree. While both the issues themselves and the way they are not communicated are both bad from a supporters point of view, if the club communicates whats going on better then it's easier for us to accept them. If from the start the club comes out and says "LaRocca is battling an ankle injury and is out for 3 months", or "Bruno has been dropped for disciplinary reasons", or "With the departure of Caceres the club has now signed Baccus to a permanent contract", or "O'Halloran is now fit and eligible for selection", instead of us finding this out 2-6 weeks after it happens it would make being a supporter much easier. And those are all easy issues to explain, nothing which gives the opposition the edge and nothing that breaches any kind of privacy. Atm the club releases stuff all information so either we have to wait for a commentator to tell us a tiny bit of gossip during the next match or otherwise wait until someone talks to some random hairdresser to find out so and so has hurt his shoulder and is out for 3 weeks. What happened with LaRocca last season was like it was from 1984. One minute he was a starting regular, the next it was like the club was making every effort to convince us he never existed. Turns out he was injured. FFS just tell us. I'm convinced we could have one of our players die in a training mishap and we wouldn't hear about it until 3 weeks later when Theo Pizzalaria brings it up mid match as they replay another failed short corner while Ned Zelic makes noises in the background. The club shoots itself in a foot by distancing itself from it's supporters. It wants to be engaging but then acts like it's some kind of huge secret organization which will only tell us what it deems we need to know, and the rest we can remain oblivious too. Not the best strategy for a club that has inherited a disenchanted and somewhat alienated fanbase from takeover and fails to deliver on any other front.
